We need more info but here's the way I see it. You already have a dsl or cable service. This service came with a modem that plugged into your computer. You now bought a wireless router that connects directly to the modem. You first have to plug your laptop directly into the router and set the router up with your ssid and the other wireless settings.
After the router is setup you have to unplug the laptop from the router and install the card. To install the card, you probably have to install the software first and after that restart the computer and when it's rebooted, plug in the card.
When it finds the card the program will have to be setup with the ssid. After that it will scan for the wireless network and should be good to go.
If you go to your services homepage, they will also have help in setting up a wireless router and laptop.

Well if you do have a wireless for the notebook, and a router to recieve the notebook's signal, the router then needs to be connected to your broadband modem which hooks up to your telephone line and the internet.....Do you have it connected to that modem??
I know the term "modem" makes you think of one of those old "dial up" modems, but it's actually the DSL box.....there is a port on your router that's labeled "internet".....connect that to the "ethernet" port on the modem.
