    "vis" is short for "visage"..or face......

    "vis-a- vis" pronounced" vizza wee"......means....."face to face" in literal terms....and otherwise....means.."in relation/respect/regard to".

    It means face to face, usually.

    But in your context, it means "in relation to"

    for example: "income vis-à-vis expenditures"

    In your case:- "electoral strength in relation to the opponents"
