DC is neither a city or a state. It's a "federal district" - I've lived here for 10 years and wished that other Americnas knew that we don't have the same voting rights and representation as they do. Even though we live in a "democracy," the District of Columbia is the only jurisdiction in the world -- whose residents of the capital are denied representation in their national legislature.
Yes - it's really true - we have no voting rights in congress (yet we pay taxes, serve in the military and everything else). Please - Ihelp us fight for our voting rights. Check out http://www.dcvote.org/
Here is some text from wikipedia about the history as well - "The District of Columbia, founded on July 16, 1790, is a federal district as specified by the United States Constitution. The U.S. Congress has ultimate authority over the District of Columbia, though it has delegated limited local rule to the municipal government. The land forming the original District came from the states of Virginia and Maryland. However, the area south of the Potomac River (39 square miles or about 100 km²) was returned, or "retroceded", to Virginia in 1847 and now is incorporated into Arlington County and the City of Alexandria. After 1847, the remaining land that formed the area now known as the District of Columbia was formed exclusively from land that once belonged to Maryland."

Truth is she/he didn't say Washington D.C. was a state she asked in what state it is in. Meaning where is it located. And I don't want to sound mean or rude but we didn't asked the person with the "best answer" how life was there we asked in what state it's located in.
P.S. I know I really won't get many votes or anything but people go of track and started to talk about how Washington DC wasn't a state and how it was a federal district. We want to know WHICH STATE it is IN

I want to know how DC gets electoral votes if they are not an actual state? Electoral votes are only granted to established states and those working in DC should only be voting absentee for the state they reside in.

It is a federal district - not a state and not a part of any state. It was founded by ...I think it was the Congress to house the federal government. It is also where the U.S. Supreme Court is located.

D.C. is not a state. It is a diamond shaped piece of land bordered by Maryland and Virginia. A great many of the people who work there commute from those two states. Someone earlier mentioned that residents do not have voting rights in Congress. This has been a hotly contended issue for many years. Until recently, I felt they did not deserve these rights, as the residents kept voting a corrupt and criminal fellow as their mayor. I was very concerned that they would do the same with their Congressional representatives. However, the most recent mayor has done a very good job of building a strong business base in the city, and has proven that things can get done without bribery and kick-backs. I'll have to rethink the issue when the new mayor takes office. Perhaps the voters have finally come to their senses and deserve to be heard in Congress.

DC was never meant to be a residential area... YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSE TO BE LIVING THERE!!!
DC was an area where the people we trust to oversee the business of government for us to stay while they are overseeing our business of government...
If you are not working for us, you should not be living there, and if you are working for us, then you should be voting in your home state /county /city

Washington D.C is not part of a state. It borders Maryland and Virginia. WHOEVER SAID THAT DC IS NOT A CITY, TELL THEM THAT THEY ARE WRONG.

Everyone is right. It's a Federal District, named after Christopher Columbus of course, and it used to be a square, with the river running through the middle.
Early on though, nearly all of the development was on the Maryland side of the river, so Virginia requested their land donation to the District back. Not sure how they did it, but they clearly got it back.

Washington DC is not a state...nor does it reside in a state. Washington is the district of columbia (hence the DC) and was created to be the center of the government, not a place for residents. It is close to Maryland and Virginia.
