The main purpose of Daylight Savings Time is to adjust the clock for when more people are out and about.

The History of the observance of Daylight Savings time is quite interesting.

In the 1800's and before, localities set their own time and operated quite satisfactorily with it. WHen the railroads came, they needed to unify their time. That is when a unified time became needed.

Daylight Savings Time was invented mainly to let there be more light in the evening time. More light was needed during the hours people were functioning in their jobs and out of doors.

The following is taked from my source:

"Part of the Act of 1918 asked for the observance of daylight saving time nationwide. That section of the act was repealed the following year, and DST thereafter became a matter left up to local jurisdictions.

"Daylight saving time was observed nationally again during World War II, but was not uniformly practiced after the war's end.

"Finally, in 1966, Congress passed the Uniform Time Act, which standardized the start and end dates for daylight saving time but allowed individual states to remain on standard time if their legislatures allowed it.

"A 1972 amendment extended the option not to observe DST to areas lying in separate time zones but contained within the same state.

"Before the move by Congress last year to extend DST, the most recent modification occurred in 1986, when the start date was moved from the last Sunday in April to the first Sunday in April. "

Benjamin Franklin first suggested daylight saving time in the late 18th century. Gradually more and more countries have adopted it. Some countries do not, tropical such as Hawaii for example. The idea is to give more time to daylight as the summer evening get longer and the opposite in the winter. Also, saving energy was a big factor, especially in more recent years. Imagine the energy saved when hundreds of millions of homes, offices etc across the northern hemisphere turn off lights, stay out longer... and so on. I'd suggest a google search if you looking for a more detailed explanation.

I think it was started during one of the World wars to help the farmers have more daylight hours to tend to animals and food.

US Daylight Savings was implemented during WWI to save energy (people would go to bed 1hr earlier and turn off their lights).

The idea is credited to Ben Franklin
