my kitty has ear mites.?

so I bought some of the over the counter ear mite treatment by hartz. does anyone know if it works well or not? It has Pyethrins 0.005% and piperonyle butoxide, technical 0.50% in it. The label says to do it for 7 to 10 days. What is the best way to apply it in his ears. Any advise would be appriciated. Thanks.

I tried Hartz for my kitty and it didn't work. I brought him to the vet and they took a sample of the ear mites and showed it to me on their microscope - eeew... they looked so ugly and were moving all around. And I thought I only had ONE pet! LOL.

Anyway they gave him revolution (which does SO many things)and his ears are nice and clean now. They have it at Petmeds.com for cheaper than the vets charge.

I have 7 cats .. Saline will not hurt

ok 1st things 1st.. Get some regular saline solution (no it will not hurt the Kitty) all you are gonna do is squeeze some into the kitties earand gently massage the ear and let the kitty shake her/his ear and some of the mites will drop out ..Black funky stuff yeah this is yuk!!. Once you get that done , take a q-tip and gently get as much of the mites out as you can.. Then put the drops in the ears .. make absolutely sure that your kitty is old enough for the drops and do not overuse the drops.

Every other day, check ears and use saline again to see if any more mites come out.. Pyethrins is a chemical that will kill the earmites..but you still need to check regularly and clean ears with saline to make sure they do not re-occur.. Hope this helped.. To prevent future earmites just check kitties ears atleast once a week..:)

Ear mites are tiny infectious organisms resembling microscopic ticks. The mite can just barely be seen as a small white dot with the naked eye but usually must be detected by examination of a sample of ear wax under a microscope. Infection usually produces a characteristic dry black ear discharge commonly said to resemble coffee grounds. Because of the classical appearance of this discharge, infection is often diagnosed based on the presence of such discharge though without visual confirmation of the mite under the microscope, it is possible to be led astray. The discharge is composed of ear wax, blood, inflammatory biochemicals, and ear mites themselves. Ear mite infection is certainly contagious among cats and dogs. Typically, the victim is an outdoor cat. Humans have been reported to develop skin rashes rarely; in general, it may consider that a human pet owner is extremely unlikely to experience any symptoms when their pet is infected with ear mites.

Be careful with the ears, use a q tip but don't go too deep. It's best to go to a vet but can be expensive. Do a little at a time so the kitty doesn't freak out.

You want to clean the ears first with warm water and cotton balls to remove any mite dirt that you can , then apply treatment liberally with cotton swabs ( if the treatment bottle doesn't have an applicator). DO NOT insert swabs depply into ear canal- you can damage kitty's eardrum.

In addition to cleaning out the ears and using the ear mite product you might also try Frontline. My vet said that recent research suggests that it can kill ear mites.

My vet told me to use mineral oil. Drop it in their ear with an eye dropper and when they shake their head the black gunk will come out. It did help but I ended up having to get medicine from the vet. The ear drops from the vet will knock it out quickly.

over the counter stuff doesnt work , vets are more expensive but the stuff does work, you need something like canural, and if your not using a flea product use stronghold from vets that also covers ear mites as well,

It should work.Just put a few drops in each ear and massage, then stand back-the kitty will shake it's ears!Clean out any black gunk with a q-tip or a cotton ball.

you have to clean the ear out first, w/ q-tip and ear cleaner solution. You can actually use vinegar and water that's supposed to work to kill ear mites too.
