Mine did the same on my old laptop. Regrettably, I didn't have much time, so I glued it in place, never to hear audio from it again. If you feel confident with laptop parts, you can fix it, otherwise, a charge from a professional is the only way.

Of course, if you do take your laptop apart, you may void your warranty. One solution for now is to try turn it up to full volume, and then snip the jack plug from an old pair of broken earphones, and insert the jack plug whenever you want silence (it's the same as using headphones, just the audio goes nowhere - silence).

Furthermore, having a loose piece of your laptop rattling around inside while the power is on is a VERY bad thing. Laptops carry large electrical charge, just like full desktops, and they usually use the inside frame of case as a bus for the charge, increasing your chances of melting this volume dial, and/or causing significant harm to your machine.

U can get it fixed if u want but if u need to control the sound, go to:

Start, All Programs, Accessories, Entertainment & Chooze Volume Control. The dial on yur laptop uses one of the volume controls to control the volume. Laterz.

It would probably cost 200-300 dollars, unless if it's set to it's minimum it's not worth it.
