Who believes America has no poverty?
Reading some of the statements made here in the Politics section it's come to my attention that some people believe because America is the richest nation in the world that there's no poverty here. I can assume that those people are American because they say "we" when they talk about the US. So I guess my real question is What planet are you from? Who here is so ignorant to say there's no poverty in the US? And if you do truly believe that, what exactly are your reasons for saying so? Do you choose to turn a blind eye to the homeless and hungry people that live here in the United States? Or do you believe that there isn't any?

Some people are poor because they choose to be. Some are poor because of their parents poor evil choices. Not everyone gets the same opportunity, and not everyone gets a 'real chance'. How can you afford to go to college if you do not have parents literally no money and you have worked hard and have average grades? Yes, people are disgustingly more poor in other countries but the distribution of wealth here is ridiculous. Celebrities shouldn't make millions. Yes they work very hard, but who and why should they be paid that much. Teachers are more eudcated and important why don't they make as much.? Anyway, there is poverty in this country.

To anyone who says that people have the opportunity to make something of themselves, I ask how are children, people who are disabled, or seniors who have had their life savings ripped off going to make something of themselves? I've noticed a lot of people in this section talk about liberals as if they are some kind of lazy slobs that just want a handout. I don't think these people realize that welfare was reformed over ten years ago (during the Clinton administration). There is a time limit for able bodied people to find a job, nowadays. Of course some people would rather live in the world of negative stereotypes than in reality.

Compare the poor in America to the poor around the world. Totally different poverty. You have to exclude people who cannot at all fend for themselves: kids, mentally retarded, etc. Most Americans are poor because they have poor money management habits. I know people who make $100K a year, but live way above their means. I make a modest amount of money, but am smart with my money. I own my car and the only debt I have is my mortgage. I paid off my student loans in a few years. I do not buy things I do not need.
Poverty is a mindset. It is also contagious. We have American poverty in out inner city, predominantly black and hispanic neighborhoods because poverty festers. You are who you associate with. When all around you talk like street people and listen to that garbage rap music, it grows on you. Our government run schools are criminally allowed to get away with pathetic education. Solution: privatization. Competition produces results.
I also have sold in people's homes and people in inner cities may be poor, but they always have a big screen tv and some of the finer things.
As for the person who said "there is definitely poverty here, and its sad that 10% of the population have 90% of the money," there is a reason for it. People who earn wealth do more of the things that earn them wealth. Poor people continue to do the things that got them in poverty in the first place. When you have a foul mouth, bad attitude, and lack a work ethic, you will stay poor. I am not saying all poor are like this, but I have earned everything I have and there are never excuses out of my mouth.

There is poverty, but is not like poverty in other countries. I have been to 3rd world countries, and what we call poverty over here is a joke.
The only people that are homeless or hungry are so because they choose to be. There are programs at every level of government (local, state, federal) and literally thousands of charitable organizations available to help our poor. If you can't find help, it is because you are not looking.

NO ONE does
The USA is the richest and best country in the world
No one has the right not to be poor
You get out what you put in
loser's are poor winners are not
America still and always the best place on earth
Sorry to hurt you poor loser's feelings
don't blame the USA for your short comings
take the responsibility for your actions

I think that what most people are saying is that...we do have poverty here...but guess what.....its not like whole towns are dieing of starvation.....and what we see as poverty here...is normal in many countries.....that is what most people mean, I think. We have people who are not so well off I know...but a majority of people here don't have it so bad.....or as bad as they think they do.....Some people think they have it bad because they can't go out and buy a brand new car every year....or they can't live in that huge mansion. We have trained ourselves to think that material possestion is the most important thing. Me, as long as I have a roof over my head and food in my belly I am happy. And most Americans have that....ulike other places where only the truly rich get to eat real meals everyday. I don't see a large majority of americans living on moldy bread and brown water. And in my mind, most people in poverty here in the states put themselves there by the choices the make.....

Poverty like much else is a matter of relativity. The U.S. is a rich nation, and therefore our poor are much better off than the poor (and in some cases the middle class) of poor nations.
I grew up very close to many housing projects and went to school with the children of many welfare recipients. They had air conditioning, television, and were certainly not starving. Not to mention that if they were involved in an accident, they could be taken to an emergency room that could not turn them away. Compare that to any developing nation.
The "poor people" that you mourn are lucky to have been born in the U.S., where they have both opportunity to move up, and the luxury of countrymen who are wealthy enough to afford charity.

Oh, we have poverty allright. It is a far more deadly issue than homosexuality or even abortion. the saddest thing is we learn to accept it. It is far too easy to not even see those living in poverty anymore. They have become, to a large part of our population, the invisible people.

there are poverty here in the good old USA but our own federal government turn a blind eye to it every day .

yea, I'd say there's poverty in America, people just don't make an issue out of it like they do about people in other countries.
