Do you need a passport for crossing the canadian border into the USA by bus?

Under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)

The proposed implementation timeline has two phases:

Beginning January 23, 2007,

ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document.

As early as January 1, 2008,

ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

You will need a passport for any travels to Canada from the US. It can't hurt even if you are going on a bus trip to get one. The immigration laws recently changed in regards to crossing the Canadian border, and I would hate to be stuck over there with no way of getting home just because of a technicality.

No currently. New travel regulations require passports for air travelers from the US to Canada, and in 2008 bus/car/train traveles will also need passports for the border crossing.

A bis travel may only need a driver's license and a copy of your birht certificate.

If you have a passport though it is exponentially simpler.

I went into Minnesota last week by bus without a passport, only showed my healthcard. Then again I was on a bus of 60 yr old and older ladies on my way to a casino in the middle of nowhere... not exactly a bus full of terrorists or drug runners, lol.... and not exacly my idea of a good time, but whatever.

Definitely by Jan. 1 you will need a passport. I believe now you can still cross with your driver's license or some kind of identity.

I've been to Canada quite a few times and I've never had a passport. I did have a driver's license though (from New York)...I think I was only asked for it once though.
