How can I get my Gateway GT5056 Desktop USB ports to work?
My computer is less than 6 months old. They were working fine, and one day - nothing... I have tried system restore and even hard drive restore... still not working. Gateway wants me to send it in for repair, but I will be without a computer for a month or so.... Please help! (Answer that works will get the points.)

THAT is one of the problems in having a computer with NO "local" service available.
You SHOULD send it in for repair, especially since you have already contacted them about it, AND it is under warranty, AND they WANT to repair it.
IF the USB ports are on the MB, that may just be the "tip" of the problem, and more could fail at any time. Get it fixed BEFORE it runs out of warranty, or something else happens.
Before returning it, I would make BACKUPS of ALL files on the system EXTERNALLY; just in case they have to do a "reload" during the repairs.
NOTE: AS SOON AS YOU OPEN THE CASE to change the hardware, you cancel your warranty!! THEN it will COST you to get it fixed.

If Gateway has asked you to return the unit, it is probably a (known) hardware issue. Not something you can repair yourself as the USB is probably part of the system board, and can not be changed separately. Since it is part of the system board, you DO want it replaced as a failure in the USB could mean that other components on the board may fail also. It could die completely a month from now.
If you decide not to have it repaired, for about $40 you can purchase a USB card to add to the PC that will give you ports to use.

Just some ideas to think about. Have you tried several usb hardwares in the ports to make sure that is not the problem?
Have you tried the same usb hardware in another computer?
Insert the usb hardware in the port and see if it shows up in.... My Computer? Then create a path to the port if it does.

I ahd the same problem with my computer, although not a gateway..............
I purchased an add-on "PCI-USB " four port internal card from NEWEGG and though the onboard usb are not fubctional yet the purchase one works fine, and i got more prorts. All this for only $5+ dollars plus about 4 dollars shipping and handling to my home.
Go to www.newegg.com and search the site in search bar for "PCI-USB" .
Good-luck!

If they are not working you may need to turn them on in the bios. You can get into the bois as the computer is booting up.

sorry to say that gateway is notorious for that. send it in OR buy a PCMCIA USB add on card and install it.
