3 Hour glucose test??

Im 27 weeks...So I went to the OB today to get my glucose test. I was told It would take an hour. I did the same with my last child, one hour. As soon as I was done with the drink the nurse came in and said "3 hours eh??" I said "no..." I didnt have three hours, only the one hour I was told it would take to do the test. Tunrs out they gave me the wrong drink, I was supposed to get the one hour test but instead they gave me 3 hour. She gave me the choice of staying and getting my blood drawn a total of 4 times, or just come back another day to do the one hour one. I stayed, i live kinda far from my OB, got the 4 draws, thankfully granny was the babysitter, but still... My Q is how many people NEED a 3 hour test and why? I dont quite get the difference in seeing after one hour or every hour for 3. Have any of you had to take a 3 hour test?

I took the one hour test and my doctor called and said the test came back positive for gestational diabetes. I went back and took the 3 hour test and that one came back negative. So look on the bright side, you won't have to go back again. Sorry you had to go through that. I wouldn't be very happy with the nurse, however I'm sure it was an honest mistake.

I had to take the 1 hour and the 3 hour glucose test. My first test came out negative (I failed by 1 point!!!). When I came back to take my 3 hour, it was negative. I don't think they should call it a 3 hour since I got poked 4 times, not 3 and they had me stay there for more than 4 hours! :(

More than likely, if your having to take the 1st hour test you will end up coming back to take the 3 hour test anyway. The reason for the 3 hour test is because you didn't "pass" the 1st hour test and they need to see how you body reacts to the sugar over that time frame. At the 3 hour mark your sugar is supposed to be going back down and if it doesn't it means you have issues.

I had gestational diabetes w/ both of my pregnancies. After the 2nd, it stayed. I'm now on pills and such, but I had no idea why is was always so thirsty and nauseous all the time when I was prego. I'm thankful for the testing or I would've really hurt my baby. The only thing that sucks about the 3 hour is all the needle sticks. Feel like a pin cushion?!

The three hour test is used when the one hour test comes back too high. I had to have it with my last 2 babies. But usually you have to have that test fasting so I don't know. After 1 hour they see how your body reacts. In the three hour one they get a much clearer view of what is going on with your body. Good luck

This usually depends on the amount of sugar one has in his/her blood (it is for diabetes so males too). There is the usual one hour test, there is a three hour test, and there is a twelve hour test. All are used to determine the blood sugar count and how fast or slow ones body would dispense of it, these test tell if a person is diabetic and what type of diabetes they have if the results so show.

No, I didn't even know there was a 3 hour one. I took the 1 hour glucose test. If I were you I would ask about that situation to the doctor because no tellin' what else they could do wrong.

I had to take the 3hr test with my second baby because I didn't pass the 1 hr. And I was measuring a little larger than my dates so they wanted to make sure. Turns out I did not have GD just a large baby.

i have taken the 3 hours test. it has to be that way because after you eat the blood sugar rises during the next hour. It reaches its highest level during the second hour and then the next hour drops and drops again. So they have to compare the function of yours with the normal rates.

I think they give you the 3hr one if you fail the 1hr one for some reason. I guess it gives them a better record of what is happening with your insulin in the blood if they suspect a problem with the 1 hour test.
