My puppy took her cast off...?

She's had it on 6 weeks with no issues of biting at it or anything. Broke her ulna and radius on her left forepaw. When we got home a few minutes ago, she was happily limping and there were pieces of the cast all over.

It was due to come off in 2 weeks (8 weeks), though the vet said 6-8 weeks.

We just moved and were going to take her to another vet anyway, so... obviously would prefer not to pay to get it put on again or taken off!

What is the best course of action?

i would call the vet. ask his advise. and most likely he will say not to worry about it and keep an eye on your baby.

As inconvenient as it is to have to fork over more money to replace the cast, you really need to act in the best interest of your pup and take her back to the vet. The fact that she is limping is a sure sign that she is not healed yet and still needs the support of the cast. if you delay, or don't have the cast put back, she will develope more problems that will eventually cost you more money, and this time, they may not be as easily fixed. You might also want to ask your vet for a lampshade to prevent her from chewing through it a second time!

  • Still take her to the vet for a follow up x-ray. Make sure things have healed as they should. I don't think a vet would put another cast on at this stage. Perhaps an ace bandage for support.

only to inform you- searching on how some time previous the smash replaced into- putting it in a forged gained't do a large purchase. A "callous" begins forming on the bone interior some days of the initial smash. If the bone isn't set wisely previously this begins- that is amazingly troublesome if not not plausible without re-breaking it to get it to heal interior the most excellent position. frequently- after a week- at maximum 10 days, there only isn't a lot you should do. you truly opt for to get the leg immobilized to stop any extra damage from occurring. No health practitioner will pin or do any style of bone surgical treatment on a doggy except that is actual mandatory- the dogs remains remodeling into and pinning/ doing surgical treatment will probably reason more advantageous issues interior the destiny. that is time-honored for a dogs to chew at forged- stressful yet time-honored. look into the Elizabethan collar that others stated- yet those are elementary to interrupt and get off if not outfitted wisely. you could also spray the forged with bitter apple to save him from chewing at it. that is only not conceivable to save your dogs sedated the entire time he has a forged on- your talking 6-8 weeks. save him crated with the collar on and in elementary words enable him out on leash walks and save him leashed interior the residing house.

Tahe dog to the vet and see if it's been healed enough to not need a new cast. If you don't and the break hasn't healed correctly than you're just prolonging your dog's recovery with possible long term health problems.

I agree with st. lady, but maybe you should put an e-collar on as well to make sure he doesn't chew off the bandage.

I'd say put it on again. It's better for the puppy, just in case she needed it on longer, this way you know she'll be OK. =D
