I would start with a topic sentence of course! (lol...of course, every essay has a topic sentence, but that's always a good reminder...)
Do some research. Take notes.
Researching first always makes it easier to start writing. Usually if you don't know where to start writing, it means you have not gathered enough information yet. But if that's not the problem, just start to figure out a topic sentence. Or maybe do an outline...write down everything you want to include in it.
Also it's easier if you make small questions from the big one such as:
What were the economic motives for slavery?
What were the social motives for slavery?
What were the cultural motives for slavery?
What were the political motives for slavery?
etc etc etc...
What I got out of the essay question, it was mainly asking why, who and what about slavery. Why did it start? because of some economical, social, cultural and political motives. What were those motives? find that out. who? slaves...who were slaves and why? What did they do? What did the children, men and women slaves do? what was their work? (I'm sure they all had different jobs, obviously a child could not do an adults work...I'm guessing)
And find some references to slavery in the books uncle tom's cabin and huckleberry finn.
Maybe you can start it off with something like this:
The motives for the creation and maintenance of slavery were...
I hope this helps you atleast a little bit even though I kind of just chopped up the question for you...

First figure out what you're going to say in your paper. Turn that into your thesis statement. I like to do a kind of mini-outline in one sentence for my thesis, e.g. when writing a paper on the positive and negative effects of globalization, I might say "Globalization has the positive effects of bringing cultures together and encouraging global trade, and has the negative effects of exploitation of foreigners by Western corporations and the loss of native culture." In your thesis, state what each paragraph or section is going to be about and give more information if needed. Give a bit of background information about your topic in the opening paragraph, maybe commenting about how slavery is viewed as abominable today, while it was acceptable 200 years ago. It puts the essay in context.
Good luck! AP US history is a hard class!

I would start by reading the materials listed plus finding a few unbiased sources. After doing that it should be easier to discover what aspects you feel strongest about and are best able to support.
