I was laid off two weeks before x-mas....?
I worked in a law firm for almost nine months. I was doing my job and always there. I had good attendance and never had aproblem with any one about my work. The firm was expanding and all of a sudden on a friday I was called into a room with out recieving notice. I was being laid off. My bonus went out the window and no severence pay. I was paid only an extra week and that was that. They took this person that was there only 3 months with no legal experience to be in my position and they hired a paralegal. Then they said they could not afford to keep me. Is it me or was this legally wrong or at least a violation. I am depressed because at this time of year there arent really any good jobs as for what I am looking for. serious answers please. What are your opinions/advice.

If you were an at will employee, you have no legal recourse.
If you had an individual employment contract, or were covered under a union contract, you can file a legal action.
In the case of an individual contract, you can get a lawyer and sue.
If you were a union member, you can contact your union and file a grievance.
Also, if your employee handbook mandated certain procedures for termination, and those procedures were violated, you also can file a lawsuit.

I know your feeling. Unfortunately, that's the way the current market works. They hire you when they need and they fire you when they're done. If you have been in the job market for a while, then you know that there is absolutely no job security that any company can promise/offer you. In reality, there are only two ways to go: either you work for someone else and make other people rich while having the insecurity of being fired at any time; or you establish your own business and deal with the stress of managing an entire organization/business, the overhead expenses, financial risk involved, taxes, employee troubles, you name it. If you are ready to make a difference in the world and in your life, you must have the means to do it. Money is a vehicle and not the destination in itself. Keep an open mind because you never know when the angel of God is knocking at your door with a blessing. If you are unsure of what I am telling you, just ask yourself HOW BAD DO YOU WANT IT? (The Money, of course). Think about it. Would you be willing to risk getting a job to be fired a few months later? Or are you willing to sit back, look at your options, and plan your game strategy. Remember: "People don't plan to fail, they fail to plan." I am only in my early 20's, but I always knew that I wanted to take charge of my destiny. Don't ever let circumstances control you; instead, control your circumstances. Could you donate some money to charity if you had it? Could you do volunteer work without having to worry about paying the bills? If you are like me; if you would like to help people, make good money, AND have the time to enjoy it, I strongly urge you to check out the following website: http://www.americhoice.unfranchise.com/
click on the "about MA" tab and click on the presentation link. If you are interested, you can e-mail them at americhoice@unfranchise.com You can never say that you weren't given the chance. The only person stopping you from achieving your full potential is yourself. Hope this helps and God bless.

First of all, in this country there is no such thing as job security any more. And no, you can be fired at any time for any reason, especially if you live in a right to work state (not CA or MA).
They can hire ayone they want and they can fire anyone they want. Just like you have the freedom to work where you want and to make as much money as you want. Please be honest and dont try to stick them with some claim for firing you without cause.
What you need to do now is determine what skills you have and then hit tha pavement and find another job. Once you have said job, start going to an inexpensive public college and get some education in a field you like. If you enjoy law, then become a paralegal or attorney, then you definitely wont have to worry about job security and you can name your price. Also start saving 10% of what you make, right now so if you ever lose your job again, you will have some cushion financially.

First of all, I am so sorry for what happened to you! It sounds very weird for them to be "expanding," yet laying you off. Did the person who'd been there just 3 mos. know somebody? Could that person be having some kind of relationship w/a superior?
Not sure if it's illegal but it certainly doesn't sound very ethical. I'm not sure what you can do really.
If you're in CA, this website might help:
www.workrights.ca.
If you're not in CA, search the web. There's probably a site you can get information from. Good luck.

well theres nothing you can do except get unemployment at the moment, and they might try to arbitrate that, knowing lawyers, last year at this time I was alone, seperated and out of work, for Christmas I lit a candle, sang happy birthday and you know I actually learned what the real Christmas message was all about,so dont take losing your job personal, they probably wanted a cheaper person to kiss their @sses anyway.Your allowed a 5 minute pity party then get over it and hit the bricks, trust me something good will come up....I promise
