Who was the blind reporter on a NYC TV station's 10 pm newscast and how was he blinded?

I believe the channel was WNEW-TV, although I'm not positive. I DO remember that the newscast always began, "It's 10 pm -- Do you know where your children are?" and was broadcast into CT where I viewed it as a child in the early 1970s. I think the reporter had specialized in covering labor issues.

    The reporter's name is Peter Wallsten, he's blind..☺
