The very first traffic signal lights were gas-powered and only had red and green, taken from railroad lighting. Once electric traffic signal light systems were engaged, the obvious problems and wrecks occurred and the yellow was quickly added.

What colours would you like? Fuschia? Burgundy? Navy Blue? This isn't a fashion show, this is a signal that has to be understood by drivers from anywhere. It has to be the same colours in all cities and countries or people will die.

Because their a universal signal, if you screw with that stupid people will crash their cars into you, never underestimate the power of a stupid person.
