A handgun in the house?

We are going to buy a house soon, and I have been anit-gun for a long time, but now it seems right. No one is coming into my house with a gun and claiming control. No one is raping my wife and killing my kids. I want to at least put up a fight with a gun in the house. Am I wrong?

NO, you're not wrong. You would be wrong if you did not prepare yourself to protect your family. Anyone who doesn't own a gun is a naive fool.

My husband doesn't want a gun in our house, but I keep one anyway. I'm not going to sit here in this house alone with my two kids and let some psycho break down the door or sneak into the house. If I'm going down, I'm gonna go down fighting for my kids lives.

Absolutely not. Dont pay any attention to the gun nazis, who claim a bunch of BS about how they are more likely to be used in homicides. Simple fact is that when Australia banned private gun ownership violent crimes went up 300%. The gun nazis dont mention anything about the guy in Japan who went into a school and murdered 7 people with a machete. If someone is homicidal, they will find a way to kill. Law abiding citizens have every right to be armed and defend themselves. Personally, though, I prefer a 10 or 12 gauge shotgun for home defense, but there is nothing wrong with a good quality handgun, just make sure you dont get junk. I suggest a Glock, H & K, Ruger, or Beretta.

My personal beleif about using a hand gun to protect your home and loved ones is that it is better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6 if someone brakes into your home with the intent of harming you or your family you can always call 911 but chances are you would already be dead by the time the cops arived to help. However with a gun you have the option of meeting force with force depending on what the situation requires but there is another option you could always opt to get guard dog instead

No joke, I was sitting here just now, it's 2:45 in the morning, and everyone is asleep except me and my brother (who was in bed, just hasn't fallen asleep yet) and I heard our dog downstairs walking around real fast like she normally does when she is following someone through the house (and it's a big house too) and then she started growling. Lights are all off in the house including in the room I am in and it is completely silent. I hopped up, went into the hall, and listened again and slowly started walkin down my stairs. Halfway down I hear our side door shut quietly. I booked it back upstairs, got my brother, and a baseball bat and we checked the entire house. Everyone was still sound asleep and the one door that I heard shut was the only one unlocked. I ran outside ready for a fight too.

Not to mention my insane adrenaline rish right now. And you may be asking why I haven'y called the cops yet. Well basically it's like this: If I call the cops, everyone will probably wake up, we waste 2 hours talking to them. We have no idea what this person looks like, and they will be long gone.

Anyways, moral of the story is, if I had a gun, I would have grabbed that. But I don't. To kill? No. Not unless I was being shot at, which I think would have been unlikely. But I do believe that if you do catch someone in the act, it would be a hell of a lot easier to convince them to stay put while you have someone call the cops, because a gun has a lot longer of a range than a bat, and so it's easier to hit the person if they start running.

But that situation is for a person who has good self control. Honestly, in the house I live in, with the number of guys living here, there is little need for a gun. I mean seriously, a couple of guys, back home with the family from college, then the younger siblings in highschool, and then of course dad and the uncle we have living with us. you get caught here, you are so screwed. But if I were wanting to protect my family it would definitely be something worth having around. But be smart about it. Keep it loaded, but keep it locked up too. You don't want your kids getting to it, but you want to be able to access it fast enough if the opportunity ever arose.

Hope you enjoyed my story and my opinion. Helped me calm down a bit too.

It depends on the use of the gun. Honestly most homeowners should not rely on them for protection because they are arming the criminal. Most people do not have the killer instinct needed to shoot someone on sight. They need to wait for the intruder to do something, so the criminal has ample time to disarm you. Not only that, but by the time the person breaking into your home wakes you up, it is already too late to get the weapon (they should be kept with a trigger lock and in a locked case, separate from the ammo).

So, for home defense I would not recommend it. A baseball bat is a better choice unless you are going to train yourself to shoot no matter what (not as easy as it sounds) and become a marksman so you do not 'miss'.

In incidents where a hostile encounter with an armed criminal occurs, the criminal is often more experienced and skilled with his/her weapon; also, criminals may act in groups. Thus, guns are of little use as self defense for the typical owner.

The presence of a gun serves more often to escalate the likelihood and/or severity of violence.

No, you are not wrong. It's perfectly reasonable to want to protect yourself and your family.

I would encourage you VERY strongly to take a course in gun safety and handling. Having a gun does NOT guarantee safety.

In fact, having a gun and not knowing how to tactically protect yourself and operate your weapon increases the likelihood that your weapon will be of less than no use and may even be used against you.

You will also need to make safety decisions about gun locks, where to keep your weapon, and so forth. You do not want your child to have access to your weapon (even toddlers are at risk here), but you also do not want your weapon to be inaccessible to you when you need it. A firearm instructor can address these issues with you as well.

Many police departments offer free gun locks, if you need one, or you can buy one wherever guns or ammunition are sold.

I may as well chime in on this one too. There have always been gun's of every kind in my house. My parents always had guns. I am a firm believer of protecting my own. I would HIGHLY recommend you take classes on the use of hand guns. Join a shooting club, teach your children gun safety and get them into classes also. I can't tell you how important it is to be educated.

You damn right, you're right. If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns, to coin a phrase.

If someone kicks my door in, in the middle of the night, that bastard's going down. Better him than us.

No, as long as you go about your purchase and ownership in a responsible manner...learn how to use your gun and clean it. When you purchase your gun be sure it is in a place that your children cannot get to....gun ownership, like everything else, requires responsibility, and respect.

I live in a quiet beach community, but guess what?

Crime- including the violent kind- happens everywhere.

It's your responsibility to protect your family.

Good luck and go to the range often
