Cursor freezes and sometimes dissappears,Using HP laptop with windows XP?

any ideas why or how to remedy?

Update:

It has the mouse pad built into the unit below the keyboard.

    If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.

    run a system restore to an earlier date when things worked right.

    start/programs/ accessories/system tools/system restore. and let it do its thing./
