1080i for movies and non action (aka sports and video games) and 720p for sports. 1080p will be for some HD DVDs (mostly video games).

DirectTV and Dish Network already broadcast their HD services in 1080i. Yes 1080p is available for DVD's and Video games but is not necessary for TV service. With the prices dropping so rapidly on HDTV's, why not get the most bang for your buck. My store sells some TV's capable of 1080i for the same price as rear projections capable of 720p. The very small difference in price is well worth the better resolution

those are diverse tiers of image high quality and backbone. 1080P= optimal high quality image, totally like minded with HD DVD's. 1080i= fantastic image high quality in basic terms a splash under the 1st. like minded with "maximum HD DVD gamers" 720p= Lowest grade of HD image any element under isn't HD. Minium requirement for many HD classes. 480p= is basically digital television. it relatively is the commonplace that each and every person "non-HD" shows are broadcast in. it relatively is the minium image high quality for a digital television. No HDTV television is 480p. unlike minded with HD DVD 480i= previous television/ Analoge

If your wondering this because your buying a TV for it they are not changing any time soon. For those of us techie junkies they where origanally supposed to change in 2004. Next proposed madatory date will be end of 2010. So wait buy a cheaper TV when this does change you will get the same tv for cheaper. But odds are it will be the 720i or p I doubt it will be 1080
