Was Jesus actually Mithras?

I think personally that Jesus was probably an enlightened man who was charismatic and shared his wisdom with others.

When the Romans got ahold of the religion (which had enough followers to bother with by this time) they made him divine, adding concepts from their own mythology (Mithras) to make him appear god-like.

We know they changed the bible, and threw out books they didn't like. Most people wouldn't have known if they changed the bible since only the powerful were literate. It was the perfect plan to take control over people in a theocracy, and it worked great.

My belief is that it is still working today.

Jesus didn't need to do miracles or be the son of God and a virgin to be special. If he was a man he could still be worth revearing.

The only problem is, what from the bible can we be sure is true?

In my personal opinion, which is not popular opinion, I believe the Gentiles were being told about the coming of the Christ the same way the Jews were but were telling the prophecies as if they already took place. Which would mean Mithras and other mythological stories that are similar to Jesus, were actually prophecies about Him coming, Notice they stopped after He came?

The Myths are similar, but I would say that Jesus did exist (as a man and nothing more) and the Mithras story was incororated into the bible later. That is the most likely explination of the similarities in my opinion.

impossble_dream: Interesting theory, but you really got to stretch it. You're say that god told them (centuries before Jesus) about the messiah and that they construed it into a separate myth? I don't know about that. \:o

We know that Mithras was a god of eastern european peoples in the second and first centuries B.C.E.

We know this because of the artifacts and writings found in that area.

No one really knows that Mithras' characterstics came before Jesus.

Jesus is not a compilation of the "sun-gods" of the day. No Proof!!

Seeing as Mithras was around about 500 years BEFORE Christ, I doubt your theory holds any water....

And, the Romans didnt execute Jesus. The Jews did. Specifically, the Zealots.

No. Jesus was a real person, the True Son of God. Mithras was a fake diety that died out long before Christ.

Jesus is a replacement for many sun-gods, which follow the solar cycles. Mithras is just one good example of this.

One is myth, Mithras, one reality, Jesus.

No, I believe that Jesus lived. The virgin birth and the miracles were fabricated.
