In what war did Mexico lose over half of its territory?

The US-Mexico War of 1846-48

Despite the revisionist historians claims to the contrary, Mexico never really "possessed" a whole lot of the land they claimed.

In Texas, there were only a few permanent settlements and missions and these had a very fragile existence due to the hostile natives, mostly Comanche and Apache. The same situation existed in southern New Mexico and Arizona.

In places like Santa Fe and the missions of California, the Spaniard farmers and ranchers that lived there gladly welcomed the Americans that showed up in 1846. These people were never part of Mexico's independence movement from Spain and did not at all consider themselves part of the already inept and corrupt country of Mexico. Of course, they would later regret so readily joining the US, as most were separated from land and rights by racist US officials. But at the time they definitely were not part of Mexico.

Mexico City was so embroiled in it's own drama and scandals that it had ignored it's northern outposts for decades and the folks that lived there had taken to consider themselves not part of Mexico at all.

The US did not steal land from Mexico. Mexico readily agreed to the millions of dollars in gold that was delivered in compensation. Had the US not so generously paid this when they did, it is certain that these territories would have made their own bid for independence or been occupied by the British or the Russians.

Mexico wasnt the mexicans land in the first place. They took it from someone else, just as Americans took the USA from the natives.

If those territorries were possesed or not it wasnt US problem, the war started because the US gov wanted more land, the US army even kidnnaped president Santa Anna to get the land, if a put a gun in your head, will you sell me your house? even if you do not want?
