You need to check this out based on the country to which you are traveling. For example,
- U.S. citizen going to Jamaica can travel on a expired passport (max one year)
- U.S. citizen going to Israel needs to have at least six months validity beyond intended return date.
Seriously, I work at The Denied Boarding Desk in the busiest airport in the U.S. I see people every day who have spent thousands of dollars on trips and then can't go because of problems like this or are stuck in transit for a day or two until their new (mighty expensive), rush passport comes in.
Call your international airline, or call International Visa Service 1-800-627-1112 to check the passport requirements. The latter also does rush U.S. passports, if you need one.

You will pay heavily for the rush job. But, do it! Get a new passport! Some countries have restrictions upon entering-your passport must be valid for 6 months after you leave.

depends where you're going - and what nationality you are. some countries require a passport to be valid at least 3 months past the entry date. check with the consulate or some travel web site for your destination

I would say just renew it because nowadays there are a lot of delayed flights due to the weather conditions.
Some people even have to wait for up to 3 days at the airport because their flights are delayed....!
Just renew it before it becomes a problem later on...

You won't have any problem traveling. But if you want to be extra careful they do offer expedited passports! You have to bring in your ticket you can travel though! But you don't have to renew it if you're going to come back before it expires.

The passport has to be valid for at least one year from the day of your departure

Not clear - does the passport expire on the day you leave the UK (at the start of your trip), or on the day that you leave Hungary in order to return to the UK?
