Why do people think bloodhounds are lazy porch dogs and don't live long lives?
I help with bloodhound rescue and have a bloodhound for a pet and a lot of people seem to think they lay around when in fact they are very active. Any dog will live a long life if it is taken care of proplerly.

Unfortunately, not all dogs do live long lives - even with the best of care. The larger the dog, the shorter their life span (generally speaking) - their hearts give out. If your bloodhound (cool dogs!!) is very active, that will definitely help him live a longer life, but this is a short-lived breed.

The average lifespan of a bloodhound is 9 to 11 years. That is about the same as any other large dog breed. You are right though about many people thinking that bloodhounds just lie around all the time.
I have had the privilege of being a witness to how wonderful these dogs are when on a manhunt. They are awesome trackers! They will not be deterred by weather or difficulty of terrain!
Great dog!

People have their own predjudices even when it comes to animals. Some may have had a lazy bloodhound and so that is how they formed their opinion, some may have been told that is characteristic of the breed and that's their source of information, however, I believe we're all individuals. People, animals, everyone. Generalizing is common but stay smart and let the ignorant speak. It is their constitutional right.

My best friends has two. They are 4 and 6. they have about the same energy level as my Newfies. Not overly active, but very active when you want them to be. Her past two lived to be 10 and 12.5 years.

Apparently, because they've never had one, only seen them portrayed as such in tv shows and movies. Too bad, they're great dogs.
