How do I introduce a 3 year old parakeet to a new cage?

Just got a beautiful new cage for our beloved parakeet Maui. Any suggestions on how to make this transition? There is no real info in our budgie manual, or when I googled it just now, and hoped someone could give us some advise. Thank you!

Put his perches and toys in the new cage. Put a millet spray need a new food dish. Then add bird. Bird should be fine!

The best way I've found from experience, is to wait till the paper (or barkdust) on the bottom of their cage gets ready to change and then put it into the new cage. It sounds gross but the bird knows it's own scent and will feel more at home and like they own the cage if it is covered with their scent. Also put the perches and toys from their old cage into the new one, or as much as possible. If the parakeet won't go in the new cage on your finger after you've done all this then let the bird climb around the outside of the cage and put away the old cage where they can't see it, smell it, or fly to it. Eventually they will go inside the new cage.

We have two cages for each bird. The first is their full-time cage and the second is their travel cage which they only use a couple of times a year. We've never had a problem with them switching between cages.

For a couple of days, put the new cage next to Maui's current home and slowly start moving his toys in to the new cage; no doubt his curiosity will get the better of him and he'll be checking out the new home. After he's gotten used to it, he shouldn't have any problems moving in.

You're right to be concerned about his reaction to a new home -- birds don't adapt well to change, even something minor like moving furniture can cause them distress.

I hope Maui enjoys his new home.

As others have said, take out all its old toys and put them into the new cage, plus a treat that the bird can easily see. Contrary to what one other person said, only a few birds have a good sense of smell, mostly those that rely on the smell of rotting meat to find their food (vultures). Parakeets have a pathetic sense of smell, so the only thing you're doing is messing up their new cage by transferring old waste over.

If you have lots of time, try to line up the two cages so the doors are open and right against each other, that way your bird can decide on its own when it wants to go into its new cage, just by going to the door and hopping through. (don't expect this to happen within 5 minutes though).

I have 5 parakeets and i have experienced your problem before..first make the cage roomy and homey and put toys it it then try staying away from the bird because they're always scared at first and u don't want the bird to be scared of you...birds have good memory they'll remember what happened the first day they came to a new home so you'll want to be pretty gentle to it..after about 1 month or so the bird should get used to u ..so then u try moving on to training it just by putting ur finger in front of the bird and letting it get on.or putting it on ur shoulder.....good luck!

I was faced with this problem a few months ago. I moved all their old toys into the new cage to make them feel more comfortable. I'm guessing they got used to their new cage because the toys already have their scents on them. This will make them feel safe.

Yes you can but show him this and put him in it then take him out this would make the transition easier.

if your bird is scared of it put it somewhere where she can see it and get used to it . then after a while maybe you can try to put her in there again some birds are scared of any kind of change. i,m a bird owner so i know.
