What is the going rate for a good Nanny or babysitter?

I have a lot of experience in childcare and babysitting, and had always done it for free for friends and family, however for the extra pocket money, I've decided to pick it up as a side job. But what is a current going rate?

I have 5kids and the money is not as important as the quality and dependability of the daycare. so charge a fair amount if you are good.

A nanny is a different breed than a sitter. A nanny its pretty much a paid mother who is either available full time as a live in nanny, or part time to a set amount of hours.

A sitter is someone you hire to watch your kids when you cant. Either while youre working or doing other things. If you're there all day, or do house work and make meals, you're a nanny. Not a sitter. Charge accordingly.

Sitters can go anywhere from 8-10 dollars, part time nannies tend to start at around 10 and can go as high as 15 in some cases. Full time nannies are usually paid per week, or salary.

I charged 10 dollars for two children, for part time nanny care, and more like 15 if they wanted house work done as well.

For full week nanny care, I generally charged about 400 a week. But I cut slack for some parents i knew who just couldnt afford it.

    I live in upstate NY.

    Every area is different.

If you're qualified, and have experience, you can set your rates better.

My daughters babysitter has about 2 years experience. She is 13 and charges $5 for 1-2 kids, $7 for 3, and $10 for 4 or more. That is the cheapest I have ever seen though. For a normal experienced babysitter in my area most charge at absolute minimum $8-10 an hour but most are 10-15 an hour. I'm in CT if that helps, everything is pretty expensive here :).

Well, I have heard that a lot of places charge a set rate of $100 dollars a week wether the kid is there or not.

I have also heard of places charging 10 dollars an hour for the first two hours and then 5 dollars an hour for additional hours.

Now if your babysitting just for friends mostly, I think 7 or 8 dollars an hour is good.

Hope that helps and gives you some options to think about.

I am 32 and I have a degree in Psychology and Child Development and graduated with honors. I am a nanny and care for one child who is 2 years old now. I do laundry and grocery shopping and run errands. I make $12 a hour (I think it should be a bit more) and work 48 hours a week.

I have heard that nannies make anywhere from $9 to $16 an hour. It depends on the family and your credentials.

In the New York Area, the going rate for a high quality nanny is $ 10/hr (or $ 8/hr plus meals and free rent for a live-in nanny). I think you should charge at least that much.

It depends on your age, and where you live. When I say age I mean are you a teen? If so 5 -7 dollars per hour. If you are talking about childcare in your home then about $100 - 150 per week.

  • I am an adult who picked up my daughter's babysitting jobs when they went off to college. for multiple kids- say 2 or more- $12 an hour. Always charge more on New Years Eve- no less than $100.

Besides your expertise, I think your rate has quite a bit to do with your location. My college-age daughter lives in SE Florida and charges $10-$12 per hour. She does activities with the children and has her own transportation.
