What is the rule for "Roughing the Center" in football?

The rule states that on a punt or extra point or a FG the opposing player can not run over the center until his head is up because he is in such a vulnerable position When his head is down it is a cheap hit, but you can hit him when he lifts his head and is ready for a hit. If he is run over then it is roughing the center and the penalty is assessed against the defensive team.

King hits were never allowed in the game, but years ago they were a part of the game. From the 1990's onwards they have become less and less frequent, as anyone who does throw one will get quite a hefty suspension. This is common in many footy codes, as there was a general move to eliminate the violence in the game, with public backlash that kids would try to emulate their idols and would throw haymakers left right and centre. As has been mentioned, most king hits are punches thrown from a position where the recipient cant see them coming, so anyone who throws one is a coward and deserves to be rubbed out of the game. If you're going to hit someone, do it in front of them.
