I have 2 identical flourescent fixtures. One behaves erratically. Why?
Both are in the kitchen, each use 2 - 40 watt tubes; one fixture however will thermally shut off after abt 5 hours of continuous use; then come back on after abt 20-30 minutes. The other rarely, almost never, thermally shuts off. Any simple way to avoid this nuisance inconvenience?
Over a 15 year period I've replaced the ballast in this fixture about 4 or maybe 5 times; in the other none.

todays fixtures, are all rapid start unites. Once they are lit, they ought to remain that way till turned off.
ither the tubes are junk, or the ballast trans formers are bad.
next times that happens, care fully touch the center of the unit below the tubes, If it smells and feels hot, replace the entire fixture, or if your handy, just replace the ballast trans former.

it could be the terminals on the bulb are dirty (kitchen vapors can do this) or the bulb is bad or even worse, the "ballast" which is the transformer in the light fixture, that is what the heat will effect, if it's still on warranrty take it back, otherwise if a new bulb doesn't solve the problem you need to change the fixture (I don't believe replacement ballasts can be obtained anymore?).
