The site listed below goes through a step-by-step process of determining if it is real.

If the second hand ticks like a caseo watch does that's a dead giveaway that you have a fake. If the back is glass or partly glass to allow you to view the watch's internal mecanisms this is also an indicator of a fake. A Rolex will be self propelled; meaning there is no battery or wind up operation. Some fake Rolex's are very well made, I had one with a very smooth sweeping second hand motion, self winding, and no glass back that I got in Thailand for about $20, but an authorized Rolex dealer was able to tell that it was fake. If you didn't spend over a thousand dollar it's fake. That doesn't mean it's not a good watch, if it tells time accurately it's good enough.

Take it to any reliable Rolex dealer, and have them check it out. If it is real, it may be worth thousands, but any good Rolex dealer would be happy to tell you. If you're thinking of buying it, go with the seller and visit the dealer together. Like a fine car, getting a Rolex isn't like buying a casual watch. If the seller refuses to go with you, odds are it is a fake $8 made in China imitation.

The price for sure. On a real Rolex the second hand movement is smooth and continuous, it does not jump with each second. Many fakes are now dividing the second hand movement between seconds to many small steps so at first glance it appears to be moving smoothly but with careful observation you can see that is is still making tiny jumps and is not Smooth and continuous. I just bought one here in China for about €15, it's a nice watch works well but you can still see the second hand making tiny little jumps as it moves around the dial.

    About $5000!

Take it to a jeweler who sells Rolexes. He/she will be able to tell you if it's authentic or not. Each one is registered, so it will have a number engraved in it somewhere.

A REPLICA means that it's a Fake, a copy , a knockoff, not the real thing, not original...something that looks like the original but, that's it, it only looks like the original.

Is the minute hand ticking? It's fake. If it sweeps smoothly, real.
