They Do The Jobs Americans Won't?

The major argument that illegals fill jobs Americans won't do is bullthe corner stone of the argument for amnesty. But look at the Swift raids. The owners knew the raid was coming and before the plants were raided in December they raised the minimum starting wage and increased benefits. (perhaps they knew that this was needed to attract American's to those jobs?) The company claimed it would cost them 40% of its work force if they were raided. It cost no more than 10%. They claimed huge mark ups in meat prices. Prices have stayed steady and the company even made a profit last quarter. The plants will need about four to six months to get back to full capacity and who are taking these jobs that "no American will do"? It seems to be Americans.

Update:

"Several union officials said Swift, which has denied knowingly hiring illegal workers and has not been charged, improved its wages, benefits and bonuses before the raids.

"They're trying to staff up their plants and they've been raising their wages the past few weeks," said United Food and Commercial Workers spokeswoman Jill Cashen. "To me, it's an example that when you make the job more attractive you get a different kind of applicant."

Update 2:

"In Greeley, where Swift is headquartered, union local president Ernie Duran said about 75 new workers have been hired - including about 30 Caucasians, 15 Somali immigrants and seven Hispanic immigrants, with the rest U.S.-born Hispanics. But the raid has not dissuaded Hispanic immigrants from seeking work at the plant, he said."

Update 3:

Local 22 union president Dan Hoppes said Tuesday that 40 to 50 new workers have been hired at the Grand Island plant since the raids.

"The lion's share of those people were Caucasian," Hoppes said.

I suppose I'm looking for a reasonable defense of the whole, "Illegals are doing jobs American's won't" argument.

I agree with you that this argument is baloney.

We should be raising the standard of living for everyone inside our borders---not justifying taking advantage of desperate people and paying them poorly and having them work in unsafe conditions.

It is just wrong. It is like a economic form of vampirism---sucking the lifeblood out of the less fortunate to keep prices low and profits high.

And even if everything started costing more because we weren't artificially keeping prices low through abusing immigrants, at least we---as a country---could stand tall again and be able to look each other in the eye.

There are plenty of people who work hard and will take any job and they are not necessarily illegal immigrants either.

And as for cincywahine's real job comment: Those are real jobs, lady. If you get paid for something; it is a job for that period of time.

And there are PLENTY of EDUCATED people NOT doing the jobs that they are trained to do because the jobs have been outsourced to other countries!

This is a great post. You are right, Americans are willing to take any job, but expect to be paid according to the law.

Do you see where Walmart is scrambling to do damage control. They have hired illegals so they don't have to give benefits...and so they don't have to pay "proper wages" as they never give them full time...just short of full time.

It is easier to hire a lot of illegals for 20-25 hours a week than fewer full time employees who get benefits!

    Thanks!

Fine with me all I say they should conform and do it the right way to stay in our country and learn our spoken word {english and OBEY our laws and pay taxes and pay to have your children educated then everything would be fine.

Americans will do anything if they are paid a reasonable wage. This is proof!

Here is a list of the jobs that I have done....

    In highschool....

I worked at McDonalds...it sucked...but my car was cool :)

Dunkin Donuts...that was my first job...

once I turned 16...I was a waitress (started as a busser)

    In college.....

    I was a housekeeper...in a hotel...

I was a live in nanny...

Then I got a real job....

Hmmmm......I think that those are all jobs that I wasn't SUPPOSED to do....huh!

    OK---fair enough....I got a better job :)

if they would give americans decent wages they would have plenty of americans working. they just want to pay cheep labor and put the money in their pockets. the govt needs to go a head and fine them.

I guess we'd all starve to death if we had no illegals here to do the work that was done before they all got here huh? Thank goodness they are here because I love my salads and fruits.

LOL, DZE. Im sorry but I for one am not willing to do any of these jobs, call me spoiled, I dont care, and I dont know too many Americans with any degree of education who will willingly and enthusiasticly clean up after some nasty people or bend up and down in 100 degree heat to pick your strawberries all because you and some other people were too stubborn to admit that no, most Americans are not willing to do these types of jobs. Be real, are we so uneducated that we have to ruin peoples lives and that of their childrens so that we can clean toilets at the local motel. I dont care what statistics you post, they mean nothing in the long run. Good luck though.
