I paid to go to the doctor and she was wrong?

I have been sick for about a month now, mostly a cough that wont go away and is really bad in the mornings and at night. She tells me it's just a cold (I get angry for going to the doctor for just that, because I had to pay and I don't have insurance) she gives me some decongestant and sends me on my way. I never have had a cold for more than 4 days, and on top of that I barely ever develop a cough, and that has been the basis of this sickness. On top of it all, her wonderful decongestant isn't working at all, nothing does. I have been taking it for 5 days. What should I do, is there ANYTHING I can do to either get my money back or see another doctor at the same clinic for free? I am just a poor college student and I feel like this cough is never going to go away unless I get the right answers. Thanks...

Update:

Last time my question was deleted for responding to answers...so I hope it isn't this time, but just for some extra info...I don't smoke, I have had other symtoms but only a few days here and there, sore throught, stuffy nose and stuff like that...and this was the first time I went to this doctor...and the last! :)

If you're coughing without symptoms such as smoking or a cold or flu, might I suggest getting an X-ray taken of your lungs?

If you have a dry cough, you could pick up a cough suppressant to take. If you have a loose cough, use an expectorant. If you decide to test out the allergy theory, don't use Benadryl - it will make you drowsy. Try Claritin or Claritin-D decongestant and both are a non-drowsy formula. I'm afraid you can't get your money back. If you wish to be seen by another doctor, call her office. Explain your situation. If she's in a group practice, another physician may be willing to help you at no cost or the first doctor may advise you over the phone, if you're willing to speak to her. Be honest and let her know you're dissatisfied. The campus Health Center (or whatever name it goes by) is also a reasonable source of health care for you to utilize.

Don't go back but call and ask for the nurse to contact you. Then tell the nurse what is going on including the fact that you don't have money for another visit.

They should be willing to call you in something like Tessalon Pearls which work very well for a cough and are not narcotics.

If more people would just be honest with their doctors about their money situations, more doctors would change the way they treat them with less expensive medications.

Most colleges and/or communities have low-cost clinics where you can get a nurse practitioner. A visit may run about $30 and you may get a Rx that is helpful. Try to find one on campus or in your yellow pages - look under Health Clinics or your County information (social services).

Alternatively you can call her office back and explain the situation and maybe she can offer you a Rx cal-in to your local pharmacy. Hope you feel better soon.

You may have allergies. Try Benadryl tablets (they'll make you drowsy, so maybe just take at night). Also, get the store brand, a lot cheaper and the same thing. If that doesn't work, you may have to go to a different dr. who is willing to listen to you. I went to an ear, nose, and throat specialist. My cough and congestion changes throughout the year as the seasons change, so he changes medications as necessary and keeps it all under control. He may be willing to share his free samples with you too since you don't have insurance.

Doctors are like car mechanics, if you don't like yours, find a new one. Going back to the same one IS NOT GETTING YOU ANYWHERE.

And n, you can't get your money back, nature of the beast.
