colors for the kitchen walls?
i have just installed black slate countertop. what wall colors would look good with this. also, the cabinets are old wooden ones that have been painted over many times, they are off-white right now. the walls are a dingy beige. there are hardwood floors of a medium brown. there is a built-in earing nook with benches which id like to upholster (fabric ideas?) also what are some suggestions for window treatments? i dont want anything frilly or floral. also dont want bright colors, bold is good, just not like neon pink or purple or anything like that. whats some good ideas for wall decor. the house is a 1920s art deco.

Go to hgtv.com they have an interactive design program where you can actually try different paint colors on your walls and cabinets. You can also do window treatments and fabrics! Look through their designs to get a feel for what you like. Art deco can be beautiful done right. You don't say weather this is an all adult space or weather there will be children or pets so window treatments and fabric are hard to judge, it does make a big difference.
If there are no children I would do a blue gray on the cabinets and either a muted blue or gray on the walls, roman shades for the windows and a microfiber patterned fabric. Use a bright color as your accent. And keep with crome/stainless steel accessories. If you want real class go for a metallic gray on part of the walls.
The other end of the color choice would be something light as in white cabinets with say creamy yellow walls, regular curtins and just a heavy fabric but be careful not to create a daycare center look!
Check out the interactive programs at the websites below!

Chocolate and clay and reds are really in right now and they are very homey and manly colors.
I would say to paint the walls Clay which is like a rust color. This color will blend beautifully with the wood tones and the black countertop will really make a beautiful accent. Decorate with Wooden accessories and black rot iron. The curtains should be either a stripe or geometric in the chocolate and red maybe some olive green or mustard yellow mixed in too. Bring your cutains with you to pick out fabric for the nook. Usually the sales people can help make suggestions. I would recommend that you pick a larger scale pattern for the curtains (unless its stripes) and a smaller almost paisley like pattern for the nook. Pull colors from your curtains to decorate. See if you can find a really moody looking print at Michaels (about $15) Maybe an African American person playing an instrument or dancing or something. Then either get it framed or buy a poster frame ($15). Make sure the frame is black. The colors from the painting will be right on the money. Or if that seems too Garrish for a kitchen, get yourself an artists canvas and pick up acrylic paints in some of the colors that I mentioned and paint one of those contempo paintings that look like nothing but paint thrown on the canvas. Don't frame it just hang as is. This color scheme is very popular right now and very easy to work with. Good luck.

A golden yellow kitchen would be beautiful with the black slate and medium wood floors and it would be something traditional to mix with your more contemporary black slate countertop. Microfiber of some kind would be nice on the benches because it's very comfortable, soft and attractive and you can clean almost anything off of it. We had a mishap with a two-year-old, a white microfiber sofa and a special dark blue pen that is designed to penetrate/stain check paper so that the check can't be washed for fradulent purposes. We thought the sofa was completely ruined, but with a little elbow grease and a lot of soap the whole thing came clean. I don't know if you can get a microfiber print though, if you did a microfiber you might have to accent and bring in colors elsewhere.

I think for your kitchen your walls should set off the black countertops and off white cabinets. The colors that come to my mind is a spicy coral, or a warm yellow, not bright though.
You could get fabric in these warm colors with a design of some sort and it would look really nice.

A great place to look would be home decorating magazines (which you can just skim through at any Barnes & Noble or bookstores in your area.) You can also search for Art Deco kitchens on Yahoo!'s image search to get ideas for wall colors. Good luck!

I would go with a deep red. It will make the cabinets pop and would be great with the black countertop. Paint is great cuz you can change it easily.
You can mix in a deep royal blue for your window treatments and benches. Bam!

I was going to say black if you were trying if you are trying to make the room look bigger. Blue and white to make the your kitchen look nice in it's own way.
