Looking for market for handmade sock monsters - input appreciated?
I make sock monsters (like sock monkeys, but a little punk) and they are extremely popular with my college age friends and I've made a few for pay. Being a crafty individual I love to make these things. I've recently thought about selling them to the public. They fall halfway between toys and textile art and each one is an individual with its own adoption papers.
So my question is what sort of market place would support the sale of these things? I'm not looking to support myself, but I would like the hobby to be self-sustaining (which at $4 a pair doesn't take too much). The local farmer's market has crafts, but they're all sort of 'country kitchen' and I don't think my little monsters would sell well enough to make a table affordable.
Also, and I know this is hard without seeing the little guys, how much would you pay for one? I've seen similar items sell online for anywhere between $25 to $40.

Finding the right market for unusual items is tough. The best bet might be to put them on ebay and see how they do and take it from there. You can start the bidding low with a reserve, or you could just do a buy it now sort of thing. Either way make sure you are pricing them so your expenses are covered, and you have an approriate profit. Depending on the options you've chosen, ebay can rack up the fees.
After ebay, you could talk to local shop owners (if any). Maybe your monsters would fit into a local store that is frequented by your target market. Stay away from the chains unless you can mass market. Good Luck!

First, you can check out this website and see if you'd like to post something here. I've heard some things about them.... <http://www.etsy.com/%3E.
Second, the first suggestion to post some on Ebay is a good idea also. List a couple of them and start the bidding at .01 to .99 and see what the bidders are willing to pay for them.
Third, Look into doing some A&C Shows---in your area and in surrounding areas. Here where I'm at, they have some A&C in the Spring and again in the Fall. I've done the Fall one and was able to sell some of my things. I didn't get rich, but I did see the potential for making some good money. I saw others sell out of their things...We also have 2 big street fairs annually and crafty things sell pretty good there. My suggestion is to find out what kind of activity there is in your area and find out about the fees and stuff like that.
Lastly, once you've found the right marketplace.... Have a good inventory and don't undersell them.
Good luck and I'll be watching for them.....

Lol, Great Idea. I recomend you try selling a couple of pairs on eBay with a starting price or one cent (or penny) , see how much yours go for and then go from there. Good Luck and I'll be watching out for them! ;)
