Is there an easy way to wash a high ceiling without dripping water on floor?

I am about to paint two rooms. I have searched the web for easy solutions regarding the necessity of washing walls, ceiling prior to painting. Some sites say yes, others say no - and just give surfaces a thorough dusting. I would like to avoid the washing step if possible. Any suggestions regarding this disgusting chore.

I have been painting for over 40 yrs and you don't need to wash the walls or ceiling. Just paint it and get it over with. If the walls are a dark color or the last time they were painted they were painted with oil based paint, then you will have to prime them first with a good water based primer, sealer, stain killer, try (KILZ). You can get it at Home Depot,or most hardware stores.

How dirty is it? What's it dirty with? Certain kinds of dirtyness will prevent the paint from sticking, so you might really need to wash it. If you must wash, you'll probably drip on the floor no matter how hard you try not to, so cover the place in plastic, or remove the furniture and clean the floor afterwards. Ask professional painters what they would do.

Go with Letters advice on the cleaning. Also, do not use plastic drop cloths. The paint does not dry on palstic and you end up tracking it everywhere you walk. The bigger problem it is very slick to work on. Just put down newspaper and cover that with a drop sheet if you do not have a canvas drop cloth.

If you are painting your ceiling then just go over it with a damp sponge to remove any dust or lint etc.

I'd use a Swiffer. Dry to dust. If you don't think it's enough, use a regular Swiffer with the damp cleaning cloths to clean it.

put down plastic drop sheets on the floor first - they only cost a couple of bucks. leave them there for the painting as well.

why don't you just dust like recommended? why make more unnecessay work for yourself. You wet the walls your going to have to let them dry right, therefore making the project longer to finish

if the ceiling is too dirty please wash. the paint will take better and you will have less coats of paint to put on.

maybe you could use a sponge-head mop - they seem to retain water better than regular mops
