11 stone + lab fair?

The Benton brothers were taken to court because they allowed their dog to get to over 11 stone. They feel the RSPCA were wrong to take action. I think the RSPCA were very right to take action. The court gave them a discharge. Why should we allow people to be cruel to animals and get away with it. 11 stone+ for a lab is an outrages size. The heart and all its joints will suffer. It cant go any place it can hardly move. £5000 fine and a 10 year ban would have been better.

Update:

josetteS perhaps you are in the wrong section then. If you own an animal you should take care of it.

I totally agree - I can't believe that the RSPCA are letting them have the dog back! I saw the brothers on the news tonight - what couple of simpletons. That poor dog.

  • i think that the rspca were right to take action because over feeding an animal is still cruelty even though they said that they loved their dog they would have noticed that he was about 7 stone over weight and the poor dog could barely stand. That poor dog was suffering and like some other dogs they would eat and eat until they explode so this is a good example of what could be the long term effects of over feeding your dog. Some dogs may look hungry but they would just eat until they explode and that is why you only feed your dog 2 times a day so this kind of situations do not have to dealt with.

I felt like crying when i saw that poor dog on the news. Even though it was going blind and just about able to walk, it just had a look about it that it was a really friendly dog and relieved that some one had rescued it from it's suffering and pain. Labs are prone to put on weight and have joint problem so why did they let it go so far. There is no excuse for any animal to become over weight.

The laws in this country are far to soft on people that abuse or neglect animals. A law should come in that you have to have a licence to own any animal and to prove that you are knowledgable about that animal. That way only true animal lovers will own them.

I think the RSPCA were were dead right to take action so because that is an outragous weight for an animal and its abusve to let him get that big.

The problem is where do we draw the line. If it's ok to take action against pet owners with obese animals, then why can't you take action against the parents of big fat children.....The courts probably discharged the case because to take action would open the floodgates.

I agree totally that it wasn't fair on the poor dog, but if they hadn't been allowed to keep the dog then the poor dog wouldn't know where it was being put.

They should be allowed to keep the dog, they are the dogs family, but the RSPCA should keep a close eye on them and make sure that the dog isn't being overfed and is getting some exercise daily.

It was right of the RSPCA to take action against these people. Their excuse was that the dog was in too much pain with arthritis to do any exercise, but thats a load of sh*t. My old dog was riddled with arthritis and he managed to have a walk every day. I think its disgusting that they were allowed to have the dof back

That dog weighs more than me!

Definitely counts as animal abuse in my book. No wonder the animal got arthritis (this was the owners' excuse for not giving it enough exercise). But if it's not exercising, it doesn't need overfeeding. Apparently the owners also disregarded their vet's dietary advice.

And for the record, I think there's a good case for charging parents who have obese kids with child abuse. If you can't look after 'em, you shouldn't have 'em...

they are out of order and should have had to pay for it more the poor dog y didnt people report it earlier when they saw it getting fat? they should be forced to eat and get obese so they cant walk teah em a lesson!
