At the risk of oversimplifying things there is actually just one major difference between the Dems & the GOP.
Traditionally the Democrats support, or at least create initiatives which generate, MORE & BIGGER GOVERNMENT. In a sense if there is a societal problem teh government is best equipped to resolve the problem given enough money & manpower.
On the other hand Republicans, tend to subscribe to the theory that the government should only be involved in those problems/issues which can't be addressed by individuals or private enterprise. (building roads, national defense, law enforcement)
In a pure sense they are both correct, altho in different ways. Big government isn't a bad thing if it gives a paycheck to folks who can't otherwise find work. The wealthy would prefer to donate to & support charities & causes of their own choosing....not what a bureaucrat in government thinks should be supported.
In actuality neither of the parties really represents what they claim to anymore. I am a life long Dem, but my fiscal views are very conservative....moreso than many traditional Republicans.
On the other hand I want the government out of my life when it comes to social issues like birth control, sexuality, & drug use.
Vote Libertarian if you want a party that still stands for something, but don't expect your candidate to win the election........
