dogs- best kind for semi dog people?

me and my family aren't really dog people. so what kind of dog do u get if u want calm, not too jumpy, not toosmall not toobig??? please help!

Update:

ok ok people. my dad grew up with dogs and i think its horrible to not grow up with one. we WANT dog. we want to know which kind. thank you

Update 2:

i dont no if im wrong, but i think people are concerned with how we will treat the dog. we are willing to take care of it and show it as much love as anybody else would. the training the work- were up to that. but some of us dont like it when dogs jump on us and stuff we want calm, not too hyper. understand better now?? if u really think we still shouldnt get a dog, u can say that but please leave a suggestion for a type of dog and put what we may have a proublem with- thats more helpful. thanks

I have read all your input and still ask myself why???

But if you need an opinion, mine would be any WELL TRAINED dog. with that said, you may want to consider the shelters, or rescues for example, F.A.C.E.S dog rescue etc. whatever you chose in the end, please consider carefully your reasons for getting a dog...not every home NEEDS a dog.

A puppy is a puppy for 2 long years...therefore the training process is just as long, if not longer, obviously somethings they pickup immediately but if not trained properly, they will not learn properly, then you will have exactly what you do not want.

I picked my dog because she was supposed to be a mellow, easy-care breed, but especially as a rescue there are no guarantees on personality. She is a bluetick coonhound-beagle mix--wonderfully friendly, 50 lbs, low-shed, low-allergenic, sounds great on paper--but as demanding as a four year old.

Among other things, I thought that "take the dog for a walk" was a euphemism for "let the dog out so she doesn't poop in the house," I didn't know I'd be required to hike daily to keep my pet adequately challenged. When it's too cold to go out she is jumpy and fearful, and yesterday she bit my daughter, which is not forgiveable. She is going back to the adoption center this week after two years of trying, a hard decision, but the most responsible one for all of us.

I would really recommend not getting a dog. She was our first dog and I knew I was not a dog person, but some of the people in our family are, so I thought we could make it work. Without that 100% commitment it's going to be very difficult to have a good relationship with this animal. (Maybe think about a cat, who needs a LOT less of your time and attention.)

Don't get a dog. All dogs require training, energy and love, despite the breed or size. All dogs as puppies and, for that matter, all untrained dogs, will be hyper and jumpy. They all need to be walked daily for 30-45 minutes (and by walk, I don't mean "throw it in the yard for an hour"). All dogs needs to be trained with lots of work from the ENTIRE family.

Trust me, if you are a semi-dog person, don't get a dog.

Get a stuffed animal, they dont jump on you, need very little to no excercize, easy to train. No I dont reccomend getting a dog if you are not willing to work with it. You cant expect a dog to act like a wind up toy, and when you feel like having a dog, wind er up.they need 24/7 care. If you cant commit dont get it!

If u are semi dog people then u do not need a dog. dogs need love and all dogs can be hyper and they need love and affection. If u are not dog people then u will not give the attention and the care and the love the dog needs. I

rescue dogs from people like u all the time.... Do not get one.

Consider another pet. There is nothing wrong with not being a dog person. Dogs are alot of work not matter what kind you have, and if you are not 100%, it is likely not to work out.

Welll....corgis are reeeeallly cute and reeeealy soft and reeeeeally

nice, but they're kind of energetic and it makes them hard to train. But if your family aren't willing to put up with that, get a fixed female basset hound. they may look boring, but they are very loyal and loving. Rescue one from the Humane Society.

try any kind of female SPAYED mix breed, of a medium size, say, dauschund minpin mix (hehehe.... yes, i'm biased.... :P ). but seriously,,,, females are much easier to take care of than males, especially if you aren't totally a dog person. second, if you get her spayed, then you don't have to worry about the dog wanting to go out when she's in heat, or having other dogs try to get to her, or having period all over your house.

females are much more intense when it comes to protecting your family. don't get a big dog, or a small dog, get a middle of the road dog. and i say get a mix because their temperment is usually calmer and more loving than a purebred. (not that there's anything wrong with purebreds...)

try going to a shelter, and find a dog that's been potty trained already, and usually, when you go to like, the dumb friends league, you can adopt a dog much cheaper than buying one from a breeder, and they're usually spayed or neutered already.

good luck, and keep in mind that if you adopt a dog, it's for life. it's a part of your family now, and it's not something that you can just get rid of because you don't want it anymore.

An older dog at the pound? But if you want a puppy maybe a basset hound? I dont think they're known for jumping and they always seem pretty calm.

a not to big not to small dog that is good with people in my opinion would have to be a cockerspaniel. but if you want a low maintenance dog get a wiener dog because they dont shed and are fairly smart. as for a dog that doesnt jump get your dog into obedience training right away
