I'm planning on buying a toy sized Yorkie...?

Question

I need some advice on these kind of dogs. Do they have to have a certain kind of diet? Do they need a lot of room to run around? Any information would help.  I am not very fond of big dogs so that is why I would prefer a breed like the yorkie. Also, I am getting the puppy at a pretty inexpensive price ($400), should I be alarmed? I know that these type of dogs can be very expensive.

I have 2 yorkie's and all they eat is Science Diet Little Bites.  Yorkie's make good apartment or small living space dogs.  They do not require a big area to run around in.  Depending on where you are getting the dog from I would be cautious about the price.  Do not buy from a pet store as they support puppy mills!  also, when you say toy size how big are you talking?  Yorkie's should be approx. 6-8 pounds.  If they are smaller than that then they will probably have some health problems later on.  Make sure to question the person who is selling it about the pup's parents and ask to see them and get their vet's name and number to make sure the parents are also healthy.  Good Luck!

Make sure you do research on a breed before jumping buying one. Also ask questions. There are never too many questions to ask the breeders.

  What shots have they had?

  How long have you been a breeder of this breed?
  
  Are the Sire and/or the Dam on the Breeder's premises ?

  Could you meet one, or both, of the parents ? 

   Are the dogs and puppies raised in the house, or in the kennels ? (Judge environment) 

   At what age do you place puppies ? (NO sooner than 12 weeks should be the answer for a small breed)

 To answer your questions: They really do not have a special diet they need to be on, however some toy breeds are picky eaters. 

 Your best bet would be to see what the breeder is feeding the puppy and go from there. If they are feeding it a cheaper food, you might want to buy a bag of a better brand that caters to toys breeds like Eukanuba or Royal Canin (which is what I feed my Chihuahuas)

 They do need some exercize, but they don't require a huge yard. Just take him/her out for a walk or let him/her run in the yard at potty times. 
 
 Also remember that Yorkies can some times have moleras (holes in the skulls) on the top on their heads. Be very careful with them. Usually the moleras close as the puppy gets older.

I have a 3yr old yorkie and a 6 wk old yorkie and they are both really good dogs. I keep my dogs on Hills Science Diet they seems to work really good it can also help control the softness in the poop!!! $400 is a great deal!!!! If you are not wanting the dog for breeding then I really wouldnt worry about the price. Good Luck

It may be that the puppy is priced so low because it is a pet quality dog and not a show quality. Or it may be because the breeder does not breed for the money. I got my first Pomaranian over 18 yrs ago. I got her from a breeder that showed dogs, and they only bred their dogs if someone in the family wanted a dog. So the family member took pick of the litter andI got one of the other ones. She was beautiful and could have shown, but that was not why I bought her. She was my dog and companion for her entire 18 years. When I got another Pomerian, that breeder bred her dogs for profit. And she had different prices for all the puppies based on ( they were in their 80's when I got her over 18 yrs ago). I would take the dog, if it is what you want and the dog is a good fit for you- don't worry about the price.

I wouldn't worry about the price. I would worry about the source. A pet store is a defininte no-no. Backyard breeders are out of the question as well. Why is this dog going so cheaply? There must be a reason.

Watch for previously diagnosed physical problems, temperament issues, etc.

If the person you are buying the dog doesn't offer an unconditional return policy then walk away.

toy yorkies are usually really expensive more than 400 i think you got a good deal, I hear they are really fragile, my friend had one and it jumped down from a couch and broke its foot. Just be really careful

Be prepared for an arrogant little bugger who "yips" constantly.  They are jittery and nervous.  They need to get out sometimes but they are not dogs that need a huge yard to let loose in.

SMALLER DOGS ARE MORE EXPENSIVE THAN BIGGER DOGS..THEY NEED ALOT OF ROOM TO ROOM TO RUN AROUND..THE DIET SHOULD BE JUST REGULAR DOG FOOD(SOME DOG FOODSSAY IF THEY ARE TO KEEP YOUR DOG ON A DIET. ALSO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR DOG HAS ALOOOOOOOOOOOOOT OF WATER
