Difference in nomination rules for Best Foreign Language film for Golden Globes vs. Academy Awards.....????

Why does the golden globes allow US films to be in the best Foreign Language Film category (Apocalypto & Letters from Iwo Jima) while the Academy Awards does not? And likewise, why can't a foreing film be up for the overall Best Drama Film award at the Golden Globes, while the Academy will allow foreign films into the Best Picture category?

In my opinion, I think it is a crock that a US film won best Foreign Language Film @ the Golden Globes (Letters from Iwo Jima) I understand it was in Japanese but it was a major US backed and produced movie. It takes away from the fact that true foreign films like Pan's Labyrinth and Volver were some of the most fantastic films but get beat out in the "Foreign" category by a US movie.

I think the Academy has it right in not allowing US movies into the Foreign category but still allowing a foreing film to compete for best picture overall. Afterall Best Picture should be any movie, foreign or not. I just think the Golden Globes theory sucks

I believe it depends on the rule of the asociation that creates and runs the awards, and i'm sure that everyone who sends a movie to be evaluated to compete for this kind of awards knows exactly what are the rules, so it's ok.

I know what you mean, it migth seem kind of unfair, but that's the way it is, and the important thing is that no matter how dificult is this challenge, how big are the american productions and how much money they expend, there are productions all over the world that can compete with them in quality.

About what offkey said, i have to say that is not exact, in fact the golden globes are given by the HFPA - Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and altougth it's in Hollywood the members are from all over the world.

In the Cannes festival there are only a few prices, and the competition is between all of the movies from any nacionality.

I don't think it's normal that a US film can be in the foreign film section. But I don't think foreign films should be in the Best drama section. Golden globes and Academy awards are national awards. The same happens in every other country. When they compete together, regardless of their country of origin, they go to festivals (Cannes, Berlin, and plenty of others).

as much as I enjoyed Toy tale 3, i think of that's unfair that it have been given nominated in the two terrific image AND terrific lively image. i assume they did not have sufficient video clips to appoint for terrific lively? even in spite of the undeniable fact that there have been particularly some sturdy ones this 3 hundred and sixty 5 days. I HATE that Inception have been given nominated for terrific image and terrific unique Screenplay - all the different Oscar noms (like terrific paintings direction) i think of it truly deserved. purely not terrific image and unquestionably not unique Screenplay. and that i'm truly chuffed that Matthew Libatique ultimately have been given the acceptance he deserved in cinematography. EDIT: James Franco IS nominated for terrific Actor on the Academy Awards - purely an FYI
