Why are Large Size clothes so ugly?
I am a big girl and wear a size 18. I like to dress in flattering attractive clothes. I have 2 problems when shopping I have encountered.
The biggest problem is that clothing designers think that a few fat cells destroy taste. I hate big patterns on shapeless blouses and dresses that look like they are cut fo fit a refridgerator rather than a human. I am big but I have curves and I like to look taylored rather than schlumpy.
Second issue is price. I like the clothes in Lane Bryant (they are sometimes way too trendy) but they are soooooo expensive. I know that a little more material goes into making larger clothes but get real.
To quote Seinfield: "What's up with that?"
I live in a very small town and the closest LB is 45 minutes away. I shop online a lot and hit outlets whenever in an area that has them. The only store in my area that carries "career wear" in plus size is Cato. Unfortunately the quality is not there. We have a Wal-Mart and a Kmart and some upscale places and that is about it.

I'm a 12/14 for whom petite pants are 4in too long, and found a great deal of clothes for my size at a store called Avenue. They have clothes up to size 32 if I'm not mistaken. Lane Bryant is my fave, mostly because of the quality and the appearance. If I wasn't that size, I would likely get at least my dress shirts there. Very classy and worth the price. They carry odd sizes too, not just the "plus size" stuff. If you're a gal with a 27 in. inseam, they probably have a few things there with that.
Macy's also has beautiful plus sizes and odd sizes (such as extra short pants)

My sister and mother has the same problem and have had it for years. I have noticed when shopping with them or for them that large sized clothes are horrid, to say the very least. But on occasion I have found wonderful clothes, unfortunately these are usually in boutiques. Do you not have a plus size store? Where I live we have 2, and the fashion is great (no puppies or flowers on the front of shirts here, or shapeless clothing) plus the prices are somewhat decent.

I have to totally agree with you. I am a size 14 and believe me the clothes are just not made for "women" My breasts are a 14/16/18 and then my hip size for pants are 12/14. It is very difficult to get the different sizes. If I find somthing that fits my chest, then it looks like a tent on the rest of my body, and vice versa. I feel for you and the industry should stop being so biased catering for only the anorexics. The same goes for the underwear. Have you tried getting a "D" cup bra and panty set, without it looking like something out of space, and oh so old fashioned. Maybe you should open up a shop designing clothes etc, for the larger women. Good luck.......

It's a very sad state of affairs. Unfortunately, the people who dictate to us what we should wear also dictate to us what size we should be-if we refuse to conform then we are punished.I'm a size 4 and i find that clothes would probably look better on me if i was a 2 or 1-that's just the way it is today. These people are designing for pre-pubescent boys-just take a look at the models on any catwalk!

It appears that the fashion industry, like society, places emphasis on the skinny a$$es and not "real women". As we have seen with recent celebrities who shall be nameless...skinny isn't always pretty!!! *yuck* Lane Bryant does have nicer clothes and you're right...they are pricey!! Have you tried shopping on e-bay for the LB line of clothing?? You can find many items on there that are brand new with the tags still on them...for a fraction of the price! I do this with Liz Claiborne as her clothing line is expensive.

I find alot of cute clothes in size 18 are you sure your not buying your clothes to big? I do agree however that they do put really ugly prints on big blouses and shirts its kind of like they think all fat people are old. good luck
