Psychological Warfare Answer?

Question

Insurgents responded to the latest moves in Iraq by dressing up as friendly troops and killing soldiers, and by engineering a bloodbath in a Shiite area while the government was trying to control the militias.  This was obviously meant to (1) get us to shoot at anything that moves again, and (2) Get Shiites angry enough at security to stop the disbanding.

Do you have any ideas what can be done to combat this?

And please, no discussion of troop build up or withdrawl.  You are there, you have the troops that are there, ours and Iraqi, that's it..  

What do you do?

simple find and destroy the milita cells responsoble for the act, target all militias that arent part of gov. forces and eliminate them. also deny them safe havens (ie sadr city), even if you have to elminate that safe haven by leaving no two stones standind.

 the romans knew how to do it, poison the wells, salt the earth and descimate the population

Hmmmn.  How about regressive techniques such as flooding Baghdad with alcohol, even saturating the air with ground clouds of alcohol.  addict the entire population, then withdrawl the alcohol, wait until withdrawl symptoms take hold and start over again.  flood Baghdad with counterfeit currency.  assasinate the new leadership and prop up the insurgency leaders - then assasinate them too.  kidnap children and relocate them to the US foster homes.  leak stories of abuse.  shoot anyone playing soccer.  have american troops tell people that there is no such think as allah, and that mohammed was a criminal.  etc....

I think you know what you have to do. Psychological warfare is basic lying. On home ground in country the place is awash with it. If you can see what it's doing here, just what the hell do you think that's going to do there? Resurrect the hundred years war?
