The quarter moon?

I'm wondering how many people actually think that the cresent of the moon is caused by a shadow of the earth on the moon. I've had two people argue with be about this in the last two days...!

    You're all wrong.

Everyone knows the Moon is made of Cheese and there's a big Rat out there in space that eats away at the full moon until it's nothing but a little slice.

The cresent of the moon is caused by sunlight on that portion of the moon that we usually see. A new moon occurs when that portion of the moon is away from the sun. As the moon rotates around the earth, that portion starts to be sunlit. An eclipse of the moon does happen due to the earth passing between the full moon and the sun (on the moon, it would be an eclipse of the sun by the earth).

That's two too many; they should know better. It is the moon's own shadow which is responsible, of course.

Guilty, I thought it was the shadow of the earth blocking the sun from the moon. Are you sure its not.

They may be confusing the phases of the moon with a lunar eclipse.
