Why has our School bus system in this country turned into a taxi service?
............providing what seems like door to door service. Not that long ago we all had to walk. I'm not talking 30 years ago either.
Have we all gotten that paranoid for our kids? Or that frickin lazy?
Between 2&4 o'clock, our city is in gridlock because busses are literally stopping every 100ft. Someone help me understand. It drives me absolutly crazy. Eveyone else has things to to between these times.

Yes, I drives me up the wall too!! I think that almost everything I think and feel about the topic has been answered by the young lady who is a teacher.
A little temperature extreme and walking to the bus stop isn't the worst thing for kids. I have to agree that there are a lot of unsavory types who target children, and safety is always a concern, but it is an extension of our detached lifestyle.
We get up with either the heat or A/C on, get ready for work, go into the garage, get in our car keep the windows up, drive to work. Go inside and work in another climate controlled building, end work reverse process. It really feels like the lack of community from our climate controlled lifestyle perpetuates the lack of "safety" when these people do venture out into the world.
Or maybe it's just me.
Another problem with the "Yellow Bus Limo Service" is fuel consumption and wear and tear on the vehicle which draws from tax dollars to run and repair it.
A heavy diesel truck averages 4-8mpg on the highway, which for the massive amount of weight is considered ok to good. A school bus which is underpowered and also quite heavy with it's cargo probably averages about 2mpg stopping every 50 feet to let 2 kids off. Not to mention the other cars behind it and the wear on the brakes. It would be both more environmentaly and economically friendly to consolidate more of the stops. Plus we keep complaining about all of our obese children, well here's a wild theory, maybe if they walked somewhere instead of being dropped off door to door.... you get the point.
Thanks for letting me rant too!!! :-)

Mr. Skunk,
I have to agree with you -- we HAVE gotten that paranoid about our kids' safety. Kids can no longer be expected to wait at a bus stop for 20 minutes in the cold morning air, before dawn sometimes, and brave it out. I just don't understand it. In the rare places I do see a true "bus stop", I typically see Mom in an SUV idling by the stop, with all the kids inside staying toasty and "safe." It's enough to make one scream.
And I am a teacher.
Have you read Friedman's The World is Flat? This bus stop nonsense and other irritations, like kids having all their free time scheduled between teams, kids all "winning" trophies in their leagues for positive self-esteem, and complaints from parents about "too much homework" all make me think that no matter what dire predictions we make, our kids aren't going to be ready for the greater world. They'll be too soft.
It's not like your boss is going to give you a trophy when you come in last in the sales department to keep your self esteem positive. It's also not like the bus of life is going to pick you up at your front door either ... entitlement, softness, and pure idiocy.
Sorry about the rant, you just picked one of my most hated societal conventions these days.

because I particularly have a son in college, perhaps, i will shed a splash easy. diverse the scholars are in there for a actual education. some are there to get faraway from parental administration, so as that they are able to social gathering or do in spite of they choose. it seems to be a regular feeling between them that their votes do no longer count quantity They have been provided that concept from the final 2 elections the place they observed lots controversy. little ones are very impressionalble and function a tendency to work out what's in front of them with out diigging into why it happend that way. a number of those problems have been construction, because prayer, and self-discipline have been faraway from the colleges. There are far too many being suggested as interest Deficite, that particularly are not. I particularly have a daughter who teachs college and he or she sees this on a daily basis. advert is in simple terms yet another cop-out for oldsters, who can no longer/won't self-discipline their little ones simply by fact they are afraid the Social amenities will come to their properties. there's a huge distinction between self-discipline and abuse. mom and dad are meant to be place fashions, yet while they are able to't/won't assume management roles, then that's lleft to the young ones piers to tell them what's nice or incorrect. So we've now little ones coaching little ones, so how do we expect greater helpful. in some unspecified time interior the destiny everybody ought to stand up and take the outcomes for his or her strikes/inactions, and maximum oftentimes it is meditated interior the 18-24 year olds. while some have each thing surpassed to them and don't ought to artwork for it, they start to assume it. Oops, sorry, Ron, i will climb down off my soapbox. even though it incredibly disturbs me to think of that those are people who will sooner or later run our u . s ..
