Is it safe to have my 8 month old female Yorkie around a 6 week old male pit bull?

I have had my Yorkie for about 6 months, and now we have a 6 week old pit. Does anybody have any experience of these two breeds being together? Any advice of information will help! Thanks!

I don't have experience with this myself, but I had to raise a couple of other concerns:

6 weeks is awfully young to take a pup from its mother and littermates. Eight weeks is the preferred minimum age. It is hard for an infant pup to separate from its family so young. It also does not give it enough time to learn how to be a dog, so to speak. Puppies need that extra few weeks of interaction with their littermates and discipline from their mother.

Also, I assume your yorkie has all her vaccinations up-to-date? If not, do so immediately and be sure to get the new pup its first round of puppy vaccinations right away.

    No matter what: good luck!

Dog aggression is part of the breed. Dog aggression is in many breeds. A dog does not have to be taught to fight to not like another dog. It's called genetics. Just because the dog hurt another dog it does not mean it will go after a child. Dogs know the difference. Dog aggression and human aggression are two different things. Encourging the dog to be a protector would be teaching human aggression. This young Pit Bull could very well be developing dog aggression at a young age. But this is a large dog playing with a very small, fragile dog and it very well could have been an accident. Play getting to rough. Supervision should have been better IMO. A Yorkie is a small dog and it is not gonna take much for any breed of dog to seriously injure a Yorkie. I own 4 Pit Bulls, A Golden, a Dachchund, I have 3 children, I have a cat. There must be very close supervision with the dogs and cat. The cat plays with the dogs but sometimes they can forget and think he is a toy. Nothing serious has happened cause we have stopped it before hand. And monitor the play. Sorry it's not the dogs fault regardless of breed. The fault is with the owner. ADD: The Yorkie is 14 yrs old it is gonna have a hard time healing after such a thing. How many stiches do you expect a small dog to need that got injured by a LARGE dog. The Yorkie can probably fit in the pups mouth already. This was owner error. The Pit Bull is just that a puppy and is still learning. It was an accient. Does not sound like dog aggression. An owner that leaves a dog unattended with a child is an idiot and should not have dogs let alone a child. That is just plain irresponsibilty. No responsible owner is gonna leave their baby on the floor with a dog without watching them. Dogs do not think like humans. Children have been injured because the parents left them unsupervised child starts crying and go trys to help the child. Not the dogs fault, it's the owners. As for the unneutered male. He was most likely the Alpha and he gets to eat first. She gets to eat last. It could also be resource guarding. You have nothing to fear with the breed as whole. What you need to fear is the person on the other end of the leash. That is where the problem starts. As I said earlier, I have 4 Pit Bulls one of which is my Service Dog.

There is no reason that the two dogs cannot be put together. Be aware that there is always a "pack leader" and this will be established right away. You have no say in who the pack leader will be, this is decided by the two dogs. As long as you teach the pit bull not to be too rough with the Yorkie you will be fine. It's not so important now, since the pit bull is small, but in a couple of months, it is going to be important that the pit doesn't hurt the Yorkie accidentally.

More and more states, counties and cities are banning pit bulls. There is a good reason for this. People that have pit bulls seem to always say...their agressiveness depends on how they were raised. However...statisics prove other wise. Yorkies are very agressive, territorial and for lack of a better word (protective). That is there nature just as is the nature of the pit bull.

There was a program the BBS did on cats. Lions in Africa, moutain lions in the rockies, the little kitten playing with the ball of string at your feet. A cat is a cat is a cat...period. Have you ever meet a ferril (sp) house cat?

The point is...instinct and breeding can never be loved or trained out of an animal.

All police departments in the USA use German Shepards as K-9 dogs. They have tested all the breeds. The top priority in these tests is what is know as the "on/off" position. What is the breeds natural aggressiveness. The K-9 animal has to have to disposition of being turned on and turned off by it's handler. All other breeds have failed. They are either to agressive or to passive.

These animals are trained by professionals. Somewhere around 60% of the animals that start this training are weeded out for various reasons.

So I agree with the answer that stated (be very careful) or you will find your Yorki's throat ripped out. I also agree by the way that Yorkies are great little dogs.

Here is something else. We had several Huskies growing up. One took to killing chickens. Once a dog kills and tastes blood that animal will want more. Period. There is nothing that can take that away from that animal.

Statistic's, a pit bulls natural agressiveness, years of experience by professional trainers, real life experiences causing the ban on these animals will of course have no effect on you.

And when the authorities come to your door and tell your beloved pit bull has just ripped the throat out of a child..........

Why did you get the puppy if you didn't think a Yorkie and a Pitbull could live safely together?

There should be no problem with a Yorkie and a Pit living together.

Any 2 dogs can grow up fine together and it works so much better as puppies. Your Yorkie will certainly try to establish dominance over the pit because females are more dominant than males in most breeds. Not all but usually. Once dominance is established between them, things will go more smoothly. Just do not allow them together unsupervised during the "getting to know each other" phase. Good luck! And growing up together almost ensures they will be fine as adults together because they know each other. Your pit may not tolerate other Yorkies but he will yours because you are starting them out so young. Good idea!

Sorry, but my answer is a definitive "NO" !!

I know certain breeds have reputations that may differ from dog-to-dog depending upon their environment. For example, lots of people see poodles as spoiled, yippy, little lap dogs who are prone to snapping at strangers. Well, we had the most wonderful poodle for almost 18 years. When I brought her home at 8 weeks, we established a firm rule in our house with our children: they could hold our poodle puppy whenever they wanted to, but gently. No rough-housing, running wild in the house, or teasing was ever allowed with our poodle. Consequently, she was very mild-mannered; and we miss her greatly.

Back to your pit bull/Yorkie relationship - both being puppies they will want to play with each other. "How cute, look at them play!" is what you'll be saying -- until their playtime gets a little rougher as they get older ... and there's the trouble: the pit bull by then will be at least 10 times bigger and powerful. And, one day their playfulness will get serious, the pit bull will bite down with jaws locking, and there goes the neck of your little Yorkie.

Also, why do you have a 6-week old pit bull when every reputable breeder/pet store knows that a puppy is better off socially, physically, and emotionally when weaned from the mother dog no sooner than 8 weeks!?

My advice is to return the pit bull and get another breed as your 2nd dog.

Their breeds aren't an issue. They are both Terriers anyway. And they're both puppies, and also they are both opposite sex. So they will do just fine. Your real issue should be getting them fixed so they don't mate when they're older. If you're worried about anything with them being together, make sure your older Yorkie doesn't harm your baby pit bull.

Well I have two yorkies, and I also have two outside dogs. The yorkies were here first. As long as you raise them together you shouldn't have any problem! Just watch them! I wouldn't leave them in a room together. However keep a close eye on them and they will probably grow to be great friends!!!! Don't you just love yorkies???????????????

obedience training for you pit.. starting at 4 months...... spay/neuter both of them and be very very careful when they play as they get older,, the pit could accidentally hurt you yorkie because of its size and power...not a good match unless you are a good superviser
