Was the merchant class looked down upon in pre-Rennaisance and Rennaisance Europe?

According to Wikipedia, the merchant class was looked down upon in ancient China and Japan because merchants did not create things, they only traded them. I believe that merchants, or at least moneylenders, held similarly low status in Europe. Could anyone confirm and elaborate?

The pre-Renaissance era was dominated by the Catholic Church. The Church was the one constant power over all European kingdoms. The Church was greatly opposed to money lending and the merchant classes for multiple reasons. Yes, on the surface the ideology of business disturbed the morals of the church in a similar way that it disturbed ancient Asia. But more important than that was the fear of the merchant class becoming more powerful than the Monarchies and the Church itself. And ultimately that is what happened!

Moneylenders certainly had a low status in Medieval Europe. The Church taught that it was wrong for Christians to make money by charging interests on loans. Of course, the Jews didn't much worry that the Church said they were going to hell for lending money, since the Church said they were going to hell anyway, so many of the moneylenders of that time were Jewish.

I'm not so sure about the later Renaissance, but generally speaking, earning money from a carefully managed estate, or through the spoils of war were regarded as being respectable sources of wealth. Moneylending and trade were not as respectable.

I agree completely mutually with your sentiments, as conventional you’ve hit the nail straight away on the pinnacle. I’ve seen over the final ten years or so a relentless degrading of the white working training extremely interior the liberal media. seem out how working training are represented, Shameless, Jeremy Kyle, bloody Jade Goody they are so oftentimes represented as "the non working type" criminals, lazy, hooligans and racist. you're able to ask your self why it extremely is happening and it to me its fairly glaring. to be sure that the rustic as an entire to settle for immigration on one in each and every of those vast scale the rustic needs to be confident that there replaced right into a want, that there replaced into jobs to fill. could those jobs be filled via the working training, Im afraid no longer, and why? by way of fact they might ask for stupid info like a basic salary, paid holiday journeys, union rights, wellbeing and risk-free practices issues and all those issues value money. in this u . s . a . we spent the final one hundred years reducing the hollow between wealthy and poor everyone taking good thing about progression, below this labour government that hollow has widened. the wealthy get richer and the poor get poorer and a delicate bypass of first technology immigrants working for slave wages save it that way. i like the way the liberal middle training offered into the "immigrants are solid for the financial gadget" fable, unusual isn’t it that the main possibly communities to be unemployed are Bangladeshi and Afro Caribbean 2nd or third technology immigrants. yet that doesn’t count to the liberals, as long as there works performed for them and the fee is low they are going to turn and blind eye. "White Flight" of direction ensues as quickly as immigrant populations get to close to to them, circulate away and leave the working training to stay with them, and seem down their noses in disgust while they for the bnp. the different component to evaluate is that 5 or six years in the past instruction manual workers the place temporarily grant, and so by way of economics of grant and insist the working type trades plumbers, brick layers, carpenters skills the place in large call for and wages went up. no one complains while a center type occupation like an accountant or solicitor can value £one hundred according to hour yet while a plasterer can value £one hundred according to day, abruptly the government take be conscious and a pair of million poles arrive on the door step trowels in hand, how handy.
