WIll canned soda/pop bust open if left in a car in extreme cold overnight?

The temp is now about 23 degrees & overnight it will drop to 14 or lower. If i buy canned pop/soda tonight and leave it in my car will it bust open as the temp is extremely low like a freezer. Normally when you put pop/soda in the freezer if you dont get it out it will burst open regardless of the packaging.

Please help-I want to go to the store after work in three hours. Beverage would sit overnight for about 12 hours before the car had heat again. It would go into the office after that as it is for an office party

Serious answers please!

Update:

wow the consensus is that only a knucklehead woudl do this. the office party is in the middle of the day and my plan was to buy 2 -24 packs of juice (whihc i know wont burst-did it before), 60-70 cans of coke/diet coke and 24 cans of faygo soda. That is a lot to bring in and out of the house in the cold, LOL

I considered plasctic bottles but they are too expensive

Most likely it will. Frozen pop will expand and the can is usually too small to hold the expanding ice. Henceforth your can explodes with pop going everywhere.

Well, the freezing point will probably be lower than the freezing point of water (32 F) because of the other ingredients. But I really can't guess exactly what that temperature would be, and it probably varies by type of pop (due to different ingredients). It's obviously somewhere between the typical freezer setting (about 0) and the freezing point of water (32).

Personally, I wouldn't take the risk. Is there a particular reason why you can't take it inside overnight?

    Soda Burst

It will pop in a matter of hours. I'm from Western NY, and I know all about leaving things in the car too long in the winter. It's great for frozen things, because you don't have to worry as much about them defrosting, but for soda - either get them tomorrow morning on the way to work, or take them in. Sorry.

Yes of course! as long as it is below freezing it will burst. The liquid inside the can will freeze and expand and then pop. Sometimes however it will just distort the can depending on the pressure.

  • I'd say yes. I left a bottle of wine in the freezer once for about 8 hours and it cracked open.

seriously, if the temp is to drop below freezing, then the soda will freeze in your car and therefor bust. dont take the chance

A large portion of soda is water. When water freezes it expands. Your cans will not be able to contain the expansion. They will rupture. When the soda thaws, it will leak out of the ruptures.

Don't let soda freeze in the can.
