Pros: All military divisions provide life lessons in discipline, job skills and personal growth. Career benefits include specialized training fields like electronics and logistics that can be highly sought after later in life. Pension and medical etc if committed that long, as well as G.I. benefits like loans and schooling. Opportunities exist for promotion if you want it bad enough. Travel and exposure to other lands and cultures are big lures to those I know that chose the Navy. It's a great way to grow up, see the world, and discover your own strength of character!
Cons: Obviously our current military involvement in the gulf exposes them to a greater threat, but I would think that the Navy or Air Force would be a lesser exposure than the Army or Marines due to being based on a US ship instead of a land base surrounded by hostile civilians. Exposure to other cultures usually means exposure to more opportunities for illegal drugs, gambling, sex etc. without a group of longtime friends around for support. You've got to be more aware of what you're getting yourself into. Current policy on redeployment makes being sent out longer than promised a very real possibility to be faced.
It's a hard decision right now with so much at stake. If my son were committed to serving, I'd think the Navy or Air Force would be a good choice.

The Air rigidity has the final high quality of existence, stations, and much less deployments. in addition they have the main smash day which ability greater time for relaxing and/or college. The Air rigidity pushes training enormous time on its human beings. Many infantrymen, marines, and sailors who enlist finally end up employing to be officers interior the Air rigidity. Negatives, the Air rigidity is particularly political and is going with the aid of enormous rigidity help on the 2nd. He ought to wind up being released early from his committment.

I bet you're scared- especially when things are so hectic in the military. You and your son need to weigh the options. write this down. What does he gain if going to the military? What skills, disciplines, other advantages does he gain? What are the costs and disadvantages? Then look at his gifts, skills, and talents. What are his options? What are the disadvantages? Then discuss the options. Us mothers don't like the military option, but sometimes it is in our child's mind and heart. Support him in whatever choice he may choose. He needs you now the most.
