Why is it that cats are the only ones that seem to understand???

That is a very good question...if you haven't been a cat "owner" for very long you might not understand yourself. I have always had a cat or cats in my life. There are so many different personalites among them. Why they understand you is because they think they "own" you and they are here to take care of you, not the other way around. That's why they will bring you presents, such as a mouse, bird or their daily catch. Cats are always in control and they also think they own your home and it's contents. I have one...that when you sneeze she comes running to check on you and meow's until you let her know you are ok. I have another one that gets in my face and puts his paws on my cheeks until I give him all the attention he needs. But when I do that to him, he gets real irritated with me. Usually - when I need them to understand me they are always right there. That's why I would never be able to live without a cat.

Because cats are like cosmic creatures with deep psychic powers.

Seriously though, I don't know. I think that any animal who has bonded with you knows your moods. And I think they want you to feel better if they think you are down. (I know what you mean. My kitty always plops down next to me, especially when I just need a little contact. He also 'tucks me in' at night - ok, I know he's just kneading the covers because he's trying to find a soft place to sleep, but he curls up next to me until he thinks I'm asleep, then he goes to sleep on my dirty laundry)

Ummm..... Are you sure they understand? Or is it that you want them to understand. There is a difference, even though the results can be interpreted the same.

My cat is stupid even by cat standards. Other cats mock him.

Because they are smarter than you.Or atleast they have much sharper sense.Believe itor not they see things that you can't even imagine.
