Respondez S'il Vous Plait, which is French for Respond please. It means to let the person who invited you know whether or not you will be attending the event. This means yes or no, both.

    Respondez, S'il Vous Plait

It's french. On invitations it's a request for you to respond with a yes or no. It helps them plan shop for party needs etc. On weddings it's really important to do by that date, which is when the couple has to give the restaurant a final count.

It is from the French phrase "respondevous sil vous plas." It rouglhly means "Will you answer please." RSVP comes from the first letters of each word in the French phrase as you can see. In all honesty I may not have the French spelling all correct but I hope this helps you.

RSVP is an abbreviation for the French phrase "Respondez S'il Vous Plait." In English, RSVP stands for "Reply Please!"

Just an added detail I didn't spot yet in the other answers: even when it doesn't literally say so, usually they mean 'please reply SOON'. It is indeed used for *planning* the party, and when people reply the night before then even though they have replied, it's not very useful anymore ::grin::

Source(s): Have seen that happen, and when -politely!- asked why they hadn't told anyone sooner they said 'but, we replied didn't we?'. D'oh.

It means they want you to let them know in advance if you plan on attending the gathering, or not.

It helps primarily with knowing how much food to prepare, and how big a space will be needed.

it is from the french phrase supplied above and means please respond or respond if you please

you should never say please rsvp because it is redundant and makes you look foolish
