Keeping birds out of your yard should be fairly easy. I would suggest a visual scare device, like the TerrorEyes. The problem with most visual scare devices like owls and CDs is that they are static and unchanging, thus birds quickly become used to them. The TerrorEyes is a large, orange balloon with owl marking and holographic eyes. The eyes appear to follow the birds wherever they go, which completely freaks them out. This is almost always enough for them to leave.

If the problem seems to be more complicated and the birds are staying, I would recommend a sonic device bought from a reputable source. There are a host of economic and humane methods to deal with pest birds. Feel free to call 1 800 860 0473 for a free consultation or visit http://www.bird-x.com./ Good luck.

Birds will go wherever they can find food or water. The only way you could keep them out would be to get rid of all sources of food. This includes trees that they can eat bugs from or nest in, grass that contains seed and insects, and all plants and dirt that could have bugs. Pretty much, you would have to concrete your whole yard. The best you can do is try whirligigs or anything that will move continuously and try to scare them. A cat or two would help also.

I enjoy watching the birds in my yard and have a feeder right outside my kitchen window so I can watch them eat while I do dishes. Very pleasant. You find yours to be messy, though. Try using flash tape, a shiny metallic ribbon-like product. It is silver on one side and red on the other. Tie 12 inch strands to areas where the birds roost. To a bird, the flashing colors look like flames and they won't come near it. I have seen it used successfully in fruit orchards and nursery yards.

It is very difficult. Even a cement back yard won't stop them, my neighbor has his dogs outside where it's 99% cement and the starlings come to steal the dry dogfood. I agree that you can try "scaring" them with tall wire pole like things, or things that wiggle & flash; twine stretched out across the yard with CDs hanging on it etc...

There are also "sonic" devices that might work:
