I would go see your doctor asap b/c you may be experiencing some type of seizure such as a "Temporal Lobe Seizure":
A temporal lobe seizure is a type of seizure that primarily involves the temporal lobes of your brain. The temporal lobes are the portions of your brain that extend from the temples to just past your ears.
Temporal lobe seizures are due to abnormal electrical activity in the temporal lobe. Sometimes these seizures are caused by an abnormality in the temporal lobe, such as a tiny scar or tumor, but often no identifiable cause is found.
or a "Petit Mal Seizure":
Petit mal seizure — also known as absence seizure — is a type of seizure that most often occurs in children. An abnormal electrical discharge in the brain causes seizures. Other types of seizures include grand mal seizure and temporal lobe seizure.
Usually, a petit mal seizure involves only a brief, sudden lapse of conscious activity. Each seizure lasts only seconds or minutes, but hundreds may occur each day. During a petit mal seizure, small jerks sometimes occur involving the facial muscles or hands. A person who experiences a petit mal seizure can usually resume normal activities immediately after the seizure ends.

I have a condition called Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis Disorder, very rare 1 in 100,000 people have it. When my potassium decreases even .1% I become paralyzed. I can't talk, walk, move, but I am aware of my surroundings. Some people get sleep paralysis. Mine last alot longer than seconds though, but it took me 18 yrs to get as bad as I am. It is hereditary and progresses with age. Does your legs and arms get like jelly anytime while working or walking? Do you ever studder? Could be just hypokalemia, low potassium. Your family doc. could test for that. Good luck, happens again write me. P.S. having children makes it much worse.

to tell you the truth I had this experience before and you had just fallen back in to a light sleep and were dreaming. I thought I was awake and saw the grim reeper lay down with me in bed and I couldn't move either. I found out it was in a different form of sleep where you think you are concious but you are not.

I have that all the time but find that I thought I was awake and had actually fallen asleep. It's so realistic hearing voices but not being able to move. I think it's from being exhausted.

lucid dream most probibly, happens between REM sleep and whatever is before that lol (sorry i forget). if it happens again see a doc, but im willing to bet a pay check that it was a lucid dream, even if you felt awake your body can take power nap things where you can have lucid dreams.

VERY scary......I would go to the Doc might be something going on in the head you're not aware of. They can do a sleep diagnostic on you.
