Yes, epsom salts in water can be very effective with abscesses. We've used that method on probably every abscess we've had (and considering the number of horses we've had, that's not just a couple). My gelding had a bad abscess (and his only one) this past summer. The farrier couldn't get it out because it was so deep, so he packed it with medicine. After a few days, it still hadn't burst, so I started soaking it daily for about 15 minutes a day with epsom salts. I probably would have done it more often if I had been able. After about three days, the farrier came back out and checked his foot. As he was cleaning out his hoof, it ruptured. He said the epsom salts did a great job of getting it to come out, and I was back on him the same day and he's had no problems since. Similar results with every other abscess. Only horse we've owned that didn't respond to that was a TB mare (off the track) with horrible feet. She was rarely totally sound and eventually had to have a hoof resectioning. She had multiple abscesses and we eventually sold her because of all of her maintenance/soundness issues. Of course, your horse could have simply bruised his foot and not developed an abscess, in which case you'll just have to give him time to heal. Soaking in epsom salts won't hurt him, though. If there's any possibility that it's something more serious or something affecting his leg, get a vet to confirm.
